Things to do in Airlie Beach
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Airlie Beach
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best weather overall, dry and sunny with high reef visibility. September is the sweet spot.
Excellent, cooler and windier. Prime sailing and the start of whale season in July.
Hot and humid shoulder month. Stinger season resumes and the Festival of Music runs in early November.
Worst months for most visitors: hot, wet, peak stingers and cyclone risk, yet busy and expensive.
Wet season tail improving through April, with prices falling after Easter.
Underrated. Dry season begins, stinger season ends, crowds thin and water is still warm.

Best things to do in Airlie Beach

Hill Inlet Lookout
The lookout above Tongue Bay gives the swirling sand and turquoise water view that defines Whitehaven.
Red Cat Adventures
A fast stable catamaran day covering Whitehaven, Hill Inlet and two snorkel stops with a buffet lunch.

Sleeping at anchor in the islands gives quieter Whitehaven time and snorkelling before breakfast.

Reefsleep
Sleeping on the pontoon under the stars gives sunset, night and dawn on the reef after day boats leave.

Where to stay in Airlie Beach
Central Airlie Beach
first trip, all-round base
Walk to the lagoon, marinas, restaurants and tour check-ins, the only base that works well without a car.
Coral Sea Marina / Shingley Drive
boat-heavy, quiet, upscale stays
The prettiest resort like pocket in town, quieter at night and handy for Coral Sea Marina departures.
Cannonvale
families, longer stays, value apartments
A quiet residential suburb with its own beach and supermarkets, linked to Airlie by the walkway.
Hamilton Island
island-resort base, families, golfers
Fly in ease, marina village and many restaurants, at resort prices and with island captivity.
Hayman / Long / Daydream Islands
resort-as-destination stays
Single resort islands for unpacking once and staying by pool and reef, with paid transfers and captive dining.
Think twice about
- Directly on the central pub strip
Not unsafe, just genuinely noisy until about 3am on peak nights. Bad for light sleepers and young kids.
- Shute Harbour
A ferry and marina point with almost no dining or nightlife. A dead zone as a base without a car.
- Proserpine
A working cane town 25 km inland. Every boat day becomes a 30 minute transfer each way.
- Very steep hilltop properties
Airlie hills are steeper than listing photos suggest. Avoid if anyone has mobility limits or a pram.

Is Airlie Beach safe?
- Wear a full stinger suit in season, October to May. Box jellyfish and Irukandji are present in these waters.
- Tropical UV is extreme all year. Use reef safe sunscreen, a rash vest, a secure hat and carry water on walks.
- Never swim in estuaries or the Proserpine River because of saltwater crocodiles. Obey croc signs.
- In a cyclone watch follow operator and hotel instructions. All water activity stops well before landfall.
Airlie Beach travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Airlie town beach is not swimmable or a snorkel beach. The lagoon, Boathaven and island beaches are the swim.
- Island day tours are fringing reef, not the outer reef. Check the itinerary says Hardy Reef if you want the outer reef.
- Cedar Creek Falls in a dry month and Whitehaven tours that only stop at the south end are recurring let downs.
- Do not stack two full boat days, a flight and a falls drive back to back. Alternate big water days with lay days.
Getting around Airlie Beach: public transport and more
- Walk the centre and boardwalk. Local buses run Shute Harbour Road to Cannonvale and Shute Harbour.
- Fly to Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine, about 30 minutes away, and book the shuttle ahead.
- Confirm your marina the day before. Coral Sea Marina and Port of Airlie are a 15 to 20 minute walk apart.
- On Hamilton Island use free shuttles or a hired buggy. Book buggies weeks ahead in peak season.
