Things to do in Heidelberg
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Heidelberg
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, one of the two best times, with blossom, open wine taverns and asparagus season.
Warmest, longest and busiest by day, with Neckarwiese, boats, beer gardens and castle events.
Autumn, locals favourite, with wine harvest, golden light and students back.
Christmas Market then the quietest, cheapest season, with short grey days and reduced timetables.
Best months overall, May, June with an illumination night, and late September to October.
What's on

Major classical music festival filling churches and halls.
- Schwetzingen SWR Festival late April-May
Festival in the palace theatre and gardens at Schwetzingen.
- Walpurgis Night at Thingstätte 30 April
Unofficial gathering is officially discouraged and controlled, admire the amphitheatre by day.
- Heidelberg Castle Festival (Schlossfestspiele) through summer
Open air theatre and concerts in the castle courtyard.
- Schlossbeleuchtung (Castle Illumination) first Saturday in June, second Saturday in July and first Saturday in September
Castle floodlit Bengal red with fireworks over the Neckar, hardest hotel weekends of summer.
- Heidelberger Herbst usually last Saturday in September

- Enjoy Jazz October-November
Major jazz festival across Heidelberg, Mannheim and Ludwigshafen.
- International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg November

Best things to do in Heidelberg

Alte Brücke

Where to stay in Heidelberg
Altstadt
first trip, all-round base
Castle, churches, restaurants and Bergbahn on your doorstep, with price and weekend bar noise as trade offs.
Neuenheim
calm, views and the Philosophenweg
Elegant residential streets and riverside hotels with the castle view, a short walk to the Altstadt.
Bergheim / Weststadt
value, transport and longer stays
Modern and business hotels with bigger rooms and better prices, a short tram ride to Marktplatz.
Handschuhsheim
village-in-the-city base
Old wine village feel with Tiefburg, quiet guesthouses and Heiligenberg trailheads, tram connected.
Bahnstadt
train-first itinerary only
Modern good value chains south west of the station, but a long walk from the Altstadt and least character.
Think twice about
- Hauptbahnhof / Kurfürsten-Anlage forecourt at night
Rough sleeping, drinking groups and transient traffic make it the least pleasant few hundred metres, mainly noise and ambience.
- Bismarckplatz at closing time
Friday and Saturday closing time brings a crowded, drunk student funnel, noisy for light sleepers to base beside.
- Far-out listings in Eppelheim, Dossenheim, Leimen or Wieblingen sold as central
Safe ordinary suburbs, but you trade walking home under the castle for a tram commute and listings are not always candid.
- Driving-based Altstadt stays without confirmed parking
Altstadt parking is scarce and expensive and parts are pedestrianised, so a cheap room that needs a car is not cheap.

Is Heidelberg safe?
- Low crime city where normal city awareness suffices and no neighbourhood needs routing around.
- Watch station forecourt ambience at night and drunk student volume on Untere Strasse weekend nights.
- Carry a phone light for steep, uneven Philosophenweg and Schlangenweg steps and unlit outer paths.
- Swim only at designated Neckar spots, never near weirs, and watch cobble and leaf slipperiness in the wet.
Heidelberg travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Eastern Hauptstrasse souvenir drift around the castle descent carries coach group mark ups.
- Castle is a magnificent ruin with museum and barrel, not furnished palace state rooms.
- Castle and Marktplatz core is busiest 11am to 3pm, stay overnight for mornings and evenings.
- Studentenkuss is a charming small gift, not a dessert course, and Thingstaette at Walpurgis Night is discouraged.
Getting around Heidelberg: public transport and more
- Train is the default, with Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof and Heidelberg-Altstadt S-Bahn covering arrivals.
- Deutschlandticket or a VRN day ticket covers S-Bahn, trams and Ladenburg, Schwetzingen and Speyer hops.
- Walk the flat Altstadt axis and tram its length, hills rise north and south, and cobbles punish smooth soles.
- Nextbike and VRNrad hire covers the station, Neuenheim and flat Neckar paths.
