Think twice about
- West 2nd Street motel row
The oldest low end motels carry the town's worst review patterns for cleanliness, upkeep and uneasy feel. The saving over Boarders Inn is trivial.
- I-80 Exit 312 truck stop fringe
Desolate and noisy all night, with nothing walkable. Mormon Island campground is a staffed exception, a random interchange motel is not a base.

Is Grand Island safe?
- Lock the car and leave nothing visible in it, especially binoculars, lenses and luggage in crane season.
- March blinds are freezing and unheated. Thermal layers, hat, gloves and heavy socks are equipment.
- Tornado season runs spring through autumn. Locate your hotel shelter plan on arrival and check the forecast daily.
Grand Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Seeing distant birds from I-80 is not the migration. Book or plan one proper dawn or dusk session.
- Chain steakhouses and chain Italian are not why you came. Use Texas T-Bone, Napoli's and Ruthie's.
- Stuhr Museum on a thin off season weekday can underwhelm. Aim for a staffed or event day.
- The cheapest motel in town is a false economy. The gap to a good value inn is small.
Getting around Grand Island: public transport and more
- You need a car. Grand Island is built for driving, with free parking and 10 minutes between any two points.
- Central Nebraska Regional Airport has daily Dallas service. Omaha is about 2.5 hours east and Lincoln about 1.5 hours by I-80.
- In crane season, leave early for blinds and drive slowly on dark gravel roads with heavy deer movement.
