Things to do in Gorontalo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Gorontalo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Main whale shark season, roughly December to July, with peaks reported in January and April to July. Always check locally days ahead.
Best all-round months, among the driest for reefs, islands and roads, but whale sharks are less reliable.
Wetter stretch, roughly November to March, with flood risk around Lake Limboto and a rain plan needed for boat days.
April can be both a whale shark peak month and one of the rainiest, so build in spare days.

Home to the Aston and Grand Q, with food choice, drivers and early starts east to Olele and Botubarani.
Dumbo Raya, east coast
divers

Saronde Island
destination island stay
Villas, lagoon and house reef on a tiny island, with all transfers organised by the resort.
Boalemo, far west coast
romantic add-on only
Over water villas two plus hours west, worth it as an add-on and wrong as a base for east coast diving.
Think twice about
- Lake Limboto flood-prone shore in the wettest months
Settlements around the shrinking lake flood in heavy rain because the lake has lost capacity. Sleep in the city and visit at sunset.
- Airport and port perimeters as a base
Both are far from food, sights and drivers and offer nothing walkable. Use them for transport, sleep in the city centre.
- Far west coast as a base for east coast diving
Pulo Cinta and Boalemo are hours west while Olele and Botubarani are east of the city. Basing west turns every dive day into a road day.

- Otanaha is a viewpoint with almost no interpretation, not a museum, so do not pay a premium for it.
- Lake Limboto is beautiful at sunset but ecologically in crisis and not a swimming lake.
- Every money complaint in reviews traces to a boat or gear price not agreed in advance.

- Hire a car and driver by the day and agree rate, fuel, hours and programme each evening.
- Use bentor motor rickshaws and online taxis in town, and arrange returns in advance out of town.
