Things to do in Gold Coast
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Gold Coast
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer: hottest, most humid, afternoon storms, roughest surf and busiest beaches. Late December to late January is the most expensive window.
Autumn: the locals favourite and our recommendation. Warm water, falling humidity and easing crowds after Easter.
Winter: dry, sunny 20 to 22 degree days, cool nights, clearest hinterland walking and peak whale season. Best value outside events.
Spring: warming water and festival dense weeks, with a hard avoid for Schoolies from mid November to early December.
Best months overall: late April to May and September to early October, warm water and low humidity without peak pricing.

Best things to do in Gold Coast
Burleigh Heads
Locals favourite beach with a protected swim, headland walks and sunset on Burleigh Hill over the skyline.
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
The essential first visit for native wildlife, free flight bird shows, kangaroo feeding and the wildlife hospital.
Warner Bros. Movie World
The pick for film fans and coaster purists, led by the DC Rivals HyperCoaster and Hollywood backlot theming.
Dreamworld
Best for mixed age groups, pairing the Steel Taipan launch coaster with a large native animal precinct.
Sea World
Choose this park only if dolphins and marine shows matter more than coasters. It is the smallest day of the three.
SkyPoint Observation Deck
Level 77 of Q1 gives the one 360 degree view that explains the coast, the surf line and the hinterland at once.
SkyPoint Climb
Australia highest external building walk, the thrill version of the Q1 view for those who want the climb.
HOTA, Home of the Arts
Lakeside gallery, outdoor stage, cinema and markets. The best value culture stop on the coast, mostly free or cheap.
Where to stay in Gold Coast
Broadbeach
most visitors, first trip, no car
Central, on the tram, walkable to beach and dining, and materially calmer than Surfers Paradise one stop north.
Burleigh Heads
return visitors, surfers and food led trips
A village inside the city with the best swimming beach, the national park, James Street and sunset on the hill.
Surfers Paradise
nightlife, specific resorts or sharp priced ocean view apartments
The famous name and tallest towers, but also the nightclub strip. Broadbeach is five minutes south and calmer at night.
Main Beach
boating, quiet and Sea World centred trips
Polished and residential, fronting ocean and Broadwater, with Tedder Avenue cafes and Marina Mirage nearby.
Coolangatta
surf, quiet family weeks and fly in weekends
By the airport on the border, with sheltered bays, world class surf points and early nights.
Gold Coast hinterland
one night add on, not a base
Rainforest retreats and lodges give a cool, misty contrast and dawn birdlife before day trippers arrive.
Think twice about
- Cavill Avenue and Orchid Avenue core, Surfers Paradise
The nightclub precinct. Persistent hot spots for fights and disorder late at night, with street noise past 2 am. Visit by day, sleep elsewhere.
- Inland highway motel strips, Ashmore and Nerang
No safety issue, a dead zone issue: nothing walkable after dark and no beach without a drive, despite beach stay listing headlines.
- Southport
The workaday CBD and hospital precinct with no surf beach and little holiday life after dark. Visit for a cheap eat, do not base there.

What to book ahead
- Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary: a few days ahead
- Warner Bros. Movie World: a few days ahead
- Dreamworld: a few days ahead
- Sea World: a few days ahead
- SkyPoint Climb: a few days ahead
- Dracula's Cabaret: a few days ahead
- Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club - The Pines Course: weeks ahead
- Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club - The Palms Course: weeks ahead
- Labart, Palette, Kiyomi, Rick Shores at weekends and Etsu need bookings days to weeks ahead in peak season.
- Buy theme park tickets online, go on a weekday, arrive at opening and do the headline coaster first.
- Book whale watching, skydive and ballooning early in the trip so weather cancellations can be re-run.
- Burleigh and Coolangatta apartments are limited and school holidays take them months out.
Is Gold Coast safe?
- Swim only between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches in daylight patrol hours. Rips are the real risk here.
- In Surfers at night stay on lit streets, do not walk the dark beach alone late, and use the tram or rideshare home.
- Secure valuables at the beach and lock hire cars at national park trailheads.
- Queensland sun burns in 15 minutes in summer. Hinterland tracks get slippery after rain and leeches appear; wear proper shoes.
Gold Coast travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Paying for a Surfers Paradise address when your taste is a Burleigh trip. The postcode is the trap.
- Two theme parks in a two or three day trip. One done properly beats two done in queues.
- Pacific Fair is a pleasant mall for a rainy hour, not a reason to travel.
- Surfers Paradise beach at midday in peak summer is crowded and outclassed by beaches 20 minutes either way.
- At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary the on site food and stacked paid encounters are where the money leaks.
- Byron Bay on a summer Saturday brings the worst traffic, parking and prices. Weekday or not at all.
- Cavill Avenue tourist strip restaurants trade on foot traffic, not repeat local custom.
Getting around Gold Coast: public transport and more
- G:link light rail runs Helensvale to Broadbeach South every 7 to 15 minutes. Tap on and off with a contactless card.
- You need a car or a tour for Springbrook, Lamington and Tamborine, which have no practical public transport.
- South of Broadbeach runs on Translink buses and rideshare, slower than the tram suburbs.
- Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is 25 minutes to Burleigh and 35 to 45 to Broadbeach. Brisbane Airport is 60 to 90 minutes north.
- Helmets are legally required when cycling in Australia.
