Things to do in Galveston
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Galveston
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool and quiet with the lowest rates outside Mardi Gras, when the Gulf is for walking.
Best window: warm, sea warming, spring migration at its peak, with Spring Break crowds in mid March.
Historic Homes Tour in early May, then heat and humidity build toward Memorial Day.
Peak beach, peak heat and peak prices, with the warmest and most swimmable water of the year.
Crowds and rates fall while the sea stays warm, but it is the heart of hurricane season.
Best window: drier, sea swimmable, densest local festival calendar and the best fishing of the year.
Mild, quiet and cheap outside Lone Star Rally, with Holiday in the Gardens from late November.
Festive and underrated, with Dickens on the Strand and the best luxury hotel value outside that weekend.

Think twice about

- Inland Broadway and I-45 corridor motels
Highway lodging with no walkable beach or neighbourhood and the island worst review variance.
- Mainland rentals marketed as Galveston in Texas City, La Marque or Hitchcock
A mainland base means a causeway drive and summer queues for every beach, dinner and sight.
- Pelican Island / Harborside

Is Galveston safe?
- Check Texas Beach Watch advisories and avoid swimming for 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain.
- Stay out of seawater with open cuts because warm Gulf water naturally carries Vibrio bacteria.
- Swim near lifeguards and never swim at San Luis Pass, where currents are notoriously lethal.
- Alcohol is permitted only at East Beach and is cited at Stewart Beach, Seawall beaches and the state park.
- June to November is hurricane season. Watch forecasts, book refundable in peak weeks and obey evacuation notices.
Galveston travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Seawall chain seafood charges local prices for frozen product aimed at cruise crowds.
- Pleasure Pier full passes are poor value for a casual visit. Ride one or two headliners at sunset instead.
- Moody Gardens value passes bundle two days of content into one. Buy for the two main pyramids.
- Do not drive onto Bolivar or West End sand without a permit, and do not expect clear blue water in Galveston.
Getting around Galveston: public transport and more
- You need a car for the island as a whole, but not for downtown, which is walkable.
- Learn the spine: Harborside and Strand downtown, Broadway in the middle, Seawall Boulevard on the Gulf side.
- From Houston take I-45 South, typically 50 to 70 minutes, but leave before 9am on summer Saturdays to beat beach traffic.
- Use the island trolley between downtown and the Seawall, and pre-book transport at night in the far West End.
- Walk on to the ferry at peak times instead of joining a car queue that can exceed an hour.
