And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Fort Worth
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best month overall: patio season, Arts Festival, gardens and zoo at their best.
Second best: heat broken, trails and patios superb, mid-October to mid-November is the value sweet spot.
Very good: spring wildflowers and May golf, or autumn colour in the Japanese Garden.
Stock Show peak in January to early February, otherwise quiet winter value.
Workable: mild winter and holiday lights, or late September as heat breaks.
Hot, with outdoor sightseeing compressed to mornings and evenings.
Worst months: routinely 95 to 105 degrees, extreme heat warnings a normal August feature.

Think twice about
- Highway motel strips on East Lancaster Avenue, I-35W, I-820 and the airport fringe
Cheapest rooms sit on frontage roads with nothing walkable and visible vagrancy around some properties.
- East Side / Stop Six and far southeast Fort Worth
Concentrated poverty, the city's highest violent-crime rates in police data, and no visitor infrastructure.
- South-east downtown shelter district around Lancaster Ave, south of the Convention Center
Visible street homelessness day and night in the shelter blocks, despite downtown overall being clean and policed.
- West 7th as a late-night base
The bar corridor gets rowdy late with well-publicised incidents. Fine for dinner, avoid lingering at 1am.

Is Fort Worth safe?
- Property crime is the realistic risk. Leave nothing visible in a car, anywhere, ever.
- Violent crime concentrates away from visitor districts and in late-night alcohol settings, notably West 7th at closing time.
- Spring tornado watches are routine in North Texas. Take weather alerts seriously and never drive into a warned storm.
Fort Worth travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Joe T. Garcia's as a food destination: patio yes, best Tex-Mex in Fort Worth no.
- Stockyards souvenir sprawl on Exchange Avenue. Buy boots or hats from a real maker such as M.L. Leddy's, or buy nothing.
- Billy Bob's on a weekday afternoon, when it is half-closed with no energy.
- One-day Dallas plus Fort Worth itineraries leave the day on I-30 seeing two downtowns badly.
Getting around Fort Worth: public transport and more
- Downtown, Stockyards and Cultural District are three nodes 10 minutes apart. Without a car use rideshare, Molly the Trolley, Trinity Metro buses and TEXRail.
- DFW International is the airport, 30 to 40 minutes by car or about an hour by TEXRail. Dallas Love Field has no direct rail.
- Check the map pin is west of Arlington before paying, as Dallas-Fort Worth listings default to Dallas.
