Things to do in Ende
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ende
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, roughly April to October with the core from May to September: most reliable roads and the best odds of a clear Kelimutu sunrise.
Shoulder months: workable and quieter, with occasional rain and afternoon cloud that can spoil a late Kelimutu visit.
Wet season, worst in January and February: daily rain, rough ferry seas and landslide and delay risk on the mountain roads.
Peak overland season: book the better Ende rooms, Moni guesthouses and drivers a few days ahead.
What's on
- Pancasila Day commemorations in Ende 1 June
Ende, where Sukarno is held to have formed the Pancasila principles in exile, marks the day at the reflection park and exile house.
- Indonesian Independence Day 17 August
Local parades and events across Flores in dry season weather, with fuller domestic transport and hotels.
Best things to do in Ende
Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno
The house where Sukarno lived in exile from 1934 to 1938, now a small museum and the town's one essential sight.
Taman Perenungan Bung Karno
The breadfruit tree where Sukarno sat and reflected, held to be where the Pancasila principles began to form.
Museum Tenun Ikat
A small museum of Ende ikat weaving beside the reflection park, worth trying despite uncertain opening hours.
Pasar Mbongawani
Ende's morning waterfront market for fish, fruit and handwoven ikat sold beside cheap printed cloth.
Pantai Ria
The town's black sand beach, a local sunset strip of coffee stalls and eateries rather than a swim beach.
Pelabuhan Ende
The working ferry and cargo harbour, best walked in the morning with the market for a read on real Flores.
Where to stay in Ende
Ende town centre and Jalan Kelimutu
one night stopovers and onward travel
Walkable to the exile house, market and harbour, minutes from the airport, with the town's full service and mid range hotels.
Pantai Ria, West Ende
a quieter, hosted stay by the sea
Sea views and sunset at the town beach, a short ride from the centre, with a well rated guesthouse.
Best restaurants in Ende
Pari Koro Resto
The town's most substantial local restaurant, a halal Indonesian kitchen known for grilled fish and rib soup.
Mokka Coffee
Ende's coffee house pouring Flores single origins from Bajawa, Ruteng and Kelimutu, with light Western food.
Rumah Makan Padang Roda Baru
The town's long standing Padang house, fast and filling rice with rendang, curries and vegetables.
Depot Pantai Ria
Simple seafood and Indonesian dishes at Ria Beach, timed for grilled fish as the sun goes down.
Blue Stone Beach Restaurant and Guesthouse
The small seafood restaurant at Blue Stone Beach, grilling the day's catch to order at the shore.
Outdoor things to do in Ende
Kelimutu National Park
Three crater lakes that change colour independently, best at sunrise and sensibly based from Moni, not Ende.
Blue Stone Beach
A black sand beach scattered with blue and turquoise stones, a road stop and grilled fish lunch, not a swim.
Kampung Adat Wologai
A lived in Lio village around a stone ceremonial courtyard, the standard cultural stop on the road to Moni.
Kampung Adat Saga
A small Lio village where the chief shows you around himself, quieter and more personal than Wologai.
Best hotels in Ende

Is Ende expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | IDR 300,000 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | IDR 650,000 a person |
| Splurge | IDR 1,200,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Grand Wisata Hotel: a few days ahead
- LCR Hotel: a few days ahead
- Flores Passport House: a few days ahead
- In July and August, and around the 1 June Pancasila Day commemorations, book the better Ende rooms and Moni guesthouses a few days ahead.
- Confirm Ende flight schedules close to travel; thin turboprop routes change and a missed connection can cost a day.
Is Ende safe?
- No part of Ende itself is a closed or restricted area; its real risks are natural and road based.
- Mount Iya is an active volcano: check the current alert level (PVMBG) before you go. Do not climb it, and stay at least 2 km away from the active crater.
- Treat Pantai Ria and Blue Stone Beach as look and sunset beaches, not swim beaches; surf, currents and stones make swimming a poor default.
- In the wet season ask locally about landslides before mountain road legs, avoid driving them after dark, and carry cash as cards and ATMs are unreliable beyond town.
Ende travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- There is no luxury tier in Ende; the Grand Wisata is the ceiling, not a five star, and the cheapest rooms there can lack windows.
- At Pasar Mbongawani, printed cloth is sold beside real handwoven ikat; ask which is handwoven and expect the real thing to cost far more.
- Museum Tenun Ikat opening hours are uncertain and parts have been closed for renovation; do not build the day around it.
- Confirm the price of grilled fish before it is cooked at beach restaurants.
Getting around Ende: public transport and more
- Fly into H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport (ENE) on Wings Air from Kupang or Labuan Bajo; schedules are thin and the direct Bali service has been discontinued.
- Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Ende to Moni, about 4 to 5 hours to Bajawa or Maumere, and 10 hours or more to Labuan Bajo; map times understate the winding Trans-Flores road.
- Hire a car with a local driver through your hotel, roughly IDR 600,000 to 800,000 a day including fuel; shared travel cars and buses are cheaper and leave when full.
- Sleep in Moni for a Kelimutu sunrise rather than leaving Ende at about 3am on dark mountain roads.
