Things to do in Duluth
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Duluth
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak summer and best overall: late June through August, all trails, trains, cruises and patios running.
Fall colour and prime hiking, locals' favourite, with late September the single best month.
Winter Duluth: December for Bentleyville and February for reliable snow, skiing and frozen waterfalls.
Spring waterfall season after snowmelt, with shoulder value and volatile weather.
Mud season, Duluth's worst window: trails muddy, ski season ending and cold rain.
Grey early November before snow and Bentleyville is a close second worst stretch.

Where to stay in Duluth
Canal Park
first trip, all-round base
Flat and on the water by the Lift Bridge, Lakewalk and Aquarium, so you can park the car and walk for two days.
Downtown / Fitger's / East Superior Street
food, culture and a local feel
Better restaurants and quieter nights than Canal Park, still walkable to it in 10 to 15 minutes.
Lincoln Park Craft District
repeat visitors, brewery trips and value
The city's best casual food and beer on foot, free parking and lower rates, five minutes from Canal Park.
East End / Lakeside-Lester Park & London Road
North Shore days and quiet
Leafy and residential near Glensheen, Lester Park and Highway 61, ideal as a North Shore base with a car.
Park Point
a beach house or special stay
Rentals on the sand spit with harbour on one side and lake on the other, one road in and out.
Think twice about
- Central Hillside
Higher crime, visible homelessness and drug activity and poorly lit side streets at night. Do not book a cheap rental here without vetting the exact block.
- Miller Hill & far West Duluth motel strips
Car dependent chain strips with no lake or walkability. Fine for one night, a trap for a Duluth trip.
- Superior, Wisconsin
Cheaper motels but a bridge crossing for every Duluth sight and a rougher downtown core at night. Choose it knowingly for price.

Is Duluth safe?
- Leave nothing visible in cars at trailheads and Canal Park lots, where break ins get seasonal reports.
- Weather is the main risk: Superior storms, winter cold and ice, spring runoff and cold shock at Park Point. Heed closed trail warnings.
- Watch for bears at campgrounds, moose on Highway 61 at dawn and dusk, deer after dark and ticks May to July inland.
- Prefer Superior Street and rideshare after midnight. Empty Skywalk and ramp areas empty out late at night.
Duluth travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Grandma's Saloon and Grill in Canal Park: location is the product and the food is average at tourist prices. Go for a drink, eat at Lake Avenue.
- Canal Park souvenir and fudge strip markups. Buy local art at Fitger's, DeWitt-Seitz or Lincoln Park makers instead.
- Driving Highway 61 without stopping. Pick three North Shore stops properly instead of a windshield tour to Grand Marais and back.
- Underdressing is the top visitor mistake. Superior can drop a July afternoon to 58F on the Lakewalk, so pack layers year round.
Getting around Duluth: public transport and more
- You want a car for Duluth and the North Shore, but not inside Canal Park. Fly to Duluth International or drive 2.5 hours from Minneapolis-St. Paul.
- Duluth climbs about 900 feet in two miles. In winter rent AWD, use the Skywalk and hotel ramps, and avoid unfamiliar Hillside streets in snow.
- Canal Park paid lots fill by 11am on summer weekends. Compare total stay cost including parking, not just room rate.
- DTA buses cover main corridors and the seasonal Port Town Trolley loops Canal Park, Downtown and Lincoln Park in summer.
