Things to do in Duisburg
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Duisburg
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, when the lakes, bathing beach, regatta course, paddleboards and harbour terraces are all alive.
Worst months, grey Ruhr winter with short days, so build a winter trip indoors around museums, opera and the Christmas market.
Shoulder season with the Duisburger Akzente cultural festival period and improving weather without crowds.
Autumn regatta and football fixtures fill the sport park on scattered weekends and book out the south first.
What's on
- Traumzeit Festival 19-21 June
An indie, pop, electronic and jazz festival staged inside the Landschaftspark against the illuminated blast furnaces.
- ExtraSchicht late June
The Night of Industrial Culture, when Ruhr industrial sites including the park and harbour open late with performances.
- Duisburger Stadtfest 16-19 July
A free city festival filling the centre with stages, street food and the MSV team presentation.
- Ruhrorter Hafenfest August
The harbour festival in Ruhrort, with a funfair, ships and fireworks over the port district quays.
- Duisburg Christmas Market 12 November to 30 December
An unusually long running Christmas market through the centre, with a big wheel and regional food stalls.
Best things to do in Duisburg
Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord
A closed ironworks turned into a vast free park, where you climb a blast furnace by day and return for the lights at night.
Tiger & Turtle
A walkable rollercoaster sculpture on a slag heap, free to climb and best at sunset for views over the Rhine and Ruhr.
Museum Küppersmühle
Post war German art at the highest level inside a converted grain mill on the Inner Harbour waterfront.
Lehmbruck Museum
A deep modern sculpture collection built around Duisburg born Wilhelm Lehmbruck, in a calm museum by Kant Park.
Zoo Duisburg
A large wooded zoo famous in Germany for its dolphinarium and its koalas, and the city default family day out.
Duisburger Innenhafen
The former grain harbour rebuilt as the city waterfront, a promenade of warehouses, a marina and restaurants.
Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt
The inland navigation museum in Ruhrort, with historic museum ships, explaining Europe's largest inland port.
Kultur- und Stadthistorisches Museum
The city history museum on the harbour, strongest on Mercator, the cartographer who mapped the modern world.
Where to stay in Duisburg
Stadtmitte, Dellviertel and the Innenhafen
first trip, all-round base
The station, theatre, both art museums, the harbour promenade and its restaurants are all within a 15 minute walk.
Duissern and the Kaiserberg edge
families, zoo and university visits, quieter streets
A leafy residential district by Kant Park and the zoo, calmer than the centre and a short tram ride to dinner.
Wedau, Sportpark and the southern lakes
lakes, regatta, football and golf trips
The greenest base in the city, beside the regatta course and the Sechs-Seen-Platte, sleepy at night by design.
Think twice about
- Marxloh
A deprived far north district with run-down housing, littered streets and a long documented crime reputation. No hotel reason to base here.
- Hochfeld
A dense, poor district of deteriorating housing and visible street disorder near the Rheinpark. Visit the park by day, do not sleep in the district.
- Duisburg Hauptbahnhof perimeter
The immediate station streets are a transit mix that makes an uneasy walk home at night. Stay a few minutes further into Stadtmitte or Dellviertel.

Is Duisburg safe?
- Use 112 in an emergency and take ordinary city care with bags around the main station.
- Do not base in Marxloh or Hochfeld, and treat the station perimeter as a transit zone late at night.
- Swim only at Strandbad Wolfssee, the other lakes and both rivers are not bathing water.
- Lock bikes properly, as bike theft is the everyday crime visitors actually meet.
Duisburg travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Koenigstrasse shopping street is functional, not a sight, so do not judge the city by it.
- Tiger and Turtle disappoints anyone who drives out expecting a ride rather than a sculpture.
- Innenhafen promenade kitchens vary while the view does not, so choose by evidence, not by terrace.
- Do not plan a Monday museum day, as the art museums close in the usual German pattern.
Getting around Duisburg: public transport and more
- Tram 903 links the centre to the Landschaftspark and toward the southern lakes districts.
- Duesseldorf is about 15 minutes by regional train, Essen and Oberhausen similarly close, Cologne under an hour.
- Walk the centre, Dellviertel and Innenhafen as one block, and plan the north, centre and south sights by cluster.
- Cycling is flat and good on the river banks and the signposted industrial heritage cycle route.
