Things to do in Dallas
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Dallas
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is best overall: 70s to 80s, Dallas Blooms, bluebonnets and patio season, with storm risk in April and May.
Summer is indoor and pool season: routine 98 to 105 degrees, outdoor picks only early or after dark; late July to August is worst.
Fall is the event peak and locals' favourite: State Fair and Autumn at the Arboretum, ideal weather by late October.
Winter is mild, cheap and underrated for food and museums, with occasional ice fronts that can shut the city for a day or two.

Where to stay in Dallas
Uptown / Turtle Creek
first trip, all-round base
The most walkable and polished base: Katy Trail at your door, McKinney Ave dining and the trolley downtown.
Downtown / Arts District
museums, business and no-car short trips
The museum cluster, Sixth Floor Museum and DART hub are all here, though streets empty after office hours.
Knox / Henderson
couples and a food-led weekend
Boutique, leafy and patio-rich, with quick rides to White Rock Lake and Lower Greenville.
Bishop Arts / Oak Cliff
character, second trips and food trips
Walkable and independent with thin hotel stock: stay on the Bishop and Davis core, across the river from downtown.
Deep Ellum
music-first trips only
Great venues and dining but thin hotels and a sketchy late-night pattern: rideshare door to door after midnight.
Think twice about
- Harry Hines Boulevard corridor
Budget motels and late-night businesses with a long reputation for vice activity: cheap rooms here are cheap for a reason.
- South Dallas / Fair Park surroundings
Little visitor infrastructure and higher crime than the centre: visit the Fair by day, sleep Uptown or Downtown.
- The Cedars / highway motel strips on I-35E, I-45 and US-75
Car-dependent, unwalkable and isolating motel strips rather than neighbourhoods.
- Far suburbs beyond I-635 (Plano, Frisco, Irving/Las Colinas)
Fine cities but the wrong base for a Dallas visit: you will spend the trip on freeways and tolls.

Is Dallas safe?
- Leave Deep Ellum before last call and rideshare from the door; bar-close disorder is a documented pattern.
- Car break-ins are notorious in Deep Ellum lots and at trailheads: leave nothing visible in the car.
- Stick to lit Elm, Main and Uptown corridors on empty downtown blocks late at night.
- Heat is the top medical risk June to September: do outdoor picks early in the morning.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Dallas travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Cowboys stadium is in Arlington, not Dallas: do not treat it as a downtown stop.
- Reunion Tower is a pleasant sunset view only, not worth displacing the Arts District or Arboretum.
- Pecan Lodge is no longer the one barbecue slot: choose Cattleack, Smokey Joe's or Goldee's instead.
- Do not drive to the State Fair and circle for parking: take the DART Green Line to Fair Park station.
Getting around Dallas: public transport and more
- Base in Uptown and walk or trolley the centre; cluster days by area and rideshare 10 to 20 minutes between clusters.
- DART light rail suits the Arts District, Deep Ellum and Fair Park; the free M-Line Trolley links Uptown, Arts District and Downtown.
- Love Field is about 15 minutes from Uptown; DFW is 30 to 45 minutes by car. Rent a car only for Fort Worth, Glen Rose, Ennis or Frisco golf.
