Things to do in Bar Harbor
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bar Harbor
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Town wakes by Memorial Day, cool and greener, quieter carriage roads and sane prices, but black flies are worst.
Peak season, everything open and warmest weather, with maximum crowds, prices and cruise ship pressure.
Best month for most adults, warm days and cool nights, thinner crowds and Precipice usually reopened.
Foliage peaks in the first two weeks, then most restaurants, boats and hotels shut by late October.
Most of town closed, no boats or shuttle, with empty carriage roads for skiing and snowshoeing and solitude.

Is Bar Harbor safe?
- Bar Island bar floods outside a roughly 3 hour window centred on low tide; check tides and set a return alarm.
- Do not do iron rung trails in wet weather, and never turn your back on the ocean when tide pooling.
- Ticks carrying Lyme disease are common May to October; wear long trousers in woods and tick check after hikes.
- Leave nothing visible in cars at trailheads, where smash and grab theft is the crime locals warn about.
Bar Harbor travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- High volume West Street waterfront spots selling identical expensive lobster rolls to cruise passengers at lunch.
- Thunder Hole at the wrong tide is just a wet rock; check the tide table, not the tour bus schedule.
- Midday Park Loop in August by car is a traffic jam; go at dawn, by shuttle, or to Schoodic.
- Sand Beach is not a beach day; the water numbs your feet, while Echo Lake is the swimming beach.
- Downtown souvenirs are often not made in Maine; try the Abbe Museum shop, Cottage Street galleries and Peekytoe.
Getting around Bar Harbor: public transport and more
- You effectively need a car to reach Bar Harbor, via Bangor airport about 50 miles away or a 4.5 to 5 hour drive from Boston.
- Use the free Island Explorer shuttle from late June to mid October for Park Loop trailheads and Jordan Pond; it does not serve Cadillac Summit Road.
- Acadia pass is 35 dollars per vehicle for 7 days in 2026; display it as rangers check.
- Downtown and trailhead lots fill by 10am in season, so start hikes before 8am or after 3pm or take the shuttle.
