- Walk Downtown at night on lit Central, Gold and Lead in pairs, and rideshare after about 11pm.
- Hydrate from arrival and go easy on alcohol night one. The city sits at 5300 feet and the crest above 10300.
Albuquerque travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Old Town plaza front row souvenir shops are not the real Old Town. Buy Native art at the IPCC store or side street galleries.
- El Pinto has a beautiful patio but tour bus average food. Do not make it your one New Mexican dinner.
- Driving Central Avenue end to end is sprawl, not a tour. Walk Nob Hill and Downtown and drive the rest with stops.
- Order medium chile first and get hot on the side. Hot in New Mexico is genuinely hot.
Getting around Albuquerque: public transport and more
- You want a car for most trips, as sight clusters sit 10 to 25 minutes apart across a wide grid.
- Car free works from Old Town or Downtown using the Rail Runner, fare free ART buses on Central and rideshares.
- Parking is mostly free or cheap. The Sunport airport is only 10 to 15 minutes from Downtown and Old Town.
