Things to do in White Desert
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit White Desert
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months. Pleasant days, cold camp nights that can approach freezing in January, and glorious camping with a warm bag.
Best months at the edges. October adds the fresh date harvest, March is warm with a khamsin dust risk.
Good shoulder months. Hotter days solved by springs at midday and formations at the ends of the day.
Worst months, with highs routinely over 40C and a camp night that never cools. Avoid for this trip.
Hot and borderline, with khamsin dust possible. Only for heat proof travellers starting at dawn.

White Desert camp
the one essential night
No room and no facilities, and the best night of the trip, built by your safari crew among the formations.
Think twice about
- Farafra town as a White Desert base
The safari market, museum, tombs, springs and Cairo buses are in Bahariya. Use Farafra only on a deliberate oasis chain itinerary.
- Anonymous camp listings with no named guide or Bawiti address
In a permit desert the operator is the safety system. A listing with no review history leaves a gap in that system.
- Al Bawiti to Siwa road
Described as closed, with military checkpoints. Enter Bahariya from Cairo instead.

- Bring small EGP notes from Cairo. Cards are accepted almost nowhere in Bawiti and ATMs are few.
Is White Desert safe?
- Permits must be applied for in advance and an official guide is required for the White Desert, Black Desert and Bahariya: use a licensed, permitted operator.
- There is limited phone reception and poor medical facilities in the Western Desert, and the nearest serious hospital care is hours away by road in Cairo.
- Carry insurance with medical evacuation.
- Road risk, heat, cold and dehydration are the everyday risks. Prefer reputable operators and daylight departures.
- Bawiti is conservative and effectively dry for visitors. Dress modestly, use modest swimwear at springs, and plan around tea, not drink.
White Desert travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A one day White Desert dash from Cairo is about 10 hours of road with no camp night. Do not buy it as your desert trip.
- An unlicensed cheap safari risks missing permits, a licensed 4x4 or winter bags, with a turned back convoy as the failure mode.
- Do not climb the chalk formations or take crystals or shells. Crystal Mountain is a photograph, not a mine.
- A week in a Bawiti hotel with no desert night misunderstands the destination. Two nights, one in camp, is the trip.
Getting around White Desert: public transport and more
- Bawiti is about 360 km and 4 to 5 hours by paved road from Cairo. There is no visitor airport or railway at Bahariya.
- Public buses run Cairo to Bawiti, historically from Turgoman station. Confirm times at the station and take a morning departure.
- Send your operator a passport copy in advance for the desert licences, carry your passport for checkpoints, and never photograph checkpoints.
- In Bawiti walk the centre and use your safari 4x4 or lodge transfers. There is no ride hailing and signal disappears in the park.
