Things to do in Minya
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Minya
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm walking days and cold bright mornings for the tomb climbs and the Amarna plain.
Good shoulder: emptier sites and rising heat, with spring khamsin dust risk in late March and April.
Borderlands: heat building in May and easing in September. Sightsee early in the day.
Worst months: highs near 40C make shadeless sites morning only. August brings the Dormition pilgrimage.

Is Minya safe?
- The areas to avoid in Egypt are the Northern and Middle Sinai and parts of the Western Desert and border areas. Minya and the Nile Valley are outside those areas.
- North Sinai and the area within 20 km of the Egypt-Libya border are off limits, and parts of South Sinai and the Western Desert are restricted. Minya Governorate is outside those areas.
- Realistic risks are road safety, heat and overcharging. Emergency numbers: police 122, tourist police 126, ambulance 123.
Minya travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One day Cairo to Minya return tours that rush Amarna into low walls at noon.
- Akhenaten Museum itineraries: no confirmed public opening, tickets or hours as of October 2026.
- Hermopolis sold as a standing Temple of Thoth. It is a ruin field with two great baboons.
- Full day site tours starting mid morning in summer. Every major site here is shadeless.
Getting around Minya: public transport and more
- Trains are the best way in: about 3.5 to 4.5 hours from Cairo and 5 to 6 hours from Luxor on air conditioned expresses.
- Every site day is a car day. Budget for a private car and driver on both the east bank and west bank days.
- Expect passport logging at stations and hotels and an armed escort at major sites. Travel with a guide who knows the system, carry your passport daily, and tell your hotel your next day plan.
