The quiet shoulder: mild days, easing wind and space on tours again after the summer crowds.
Whale season offshore, roughly June to November, when humpbacks and southern rights are possible on cruises.

Is Walvis Bay safe?
- Base on the lagoon shore; do not base in Kuisebmond, Narraville or around the port and fish factory strip.
- The Benguela water is cold enough to matter in minutes and fog closes in fast, so obey operators weather calls.
- Emergency number is 112 from a mobile; serious medical cases go to Windhoek, over four hours away.
Walvis Bay travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Expecting Swakopmund charm in Walvis Bay is the commonest disappointment; the pretty town is 30 km north.
- The cheapest Sandwich Harbour listings are where late starts and shortened routes cluster in reviews.
- Dune 7 at midday is a furnace; go in cool morning fog instead.
- The cruise, kayak and 4x4 all visit the same seal colony, so pick one and spend the saving on Sandwich Harbour.
Getting around Walvis Bay: public transport and more
- The lagoon shore, waterfront and centre fit inside a few kilometres, but Dune 7, Langstrand and Swakopmund are all drives.
- Shared taxis are per person with fares agreed before you get in and no meters; recent reports put in town rides near NAD 24.
- The 30 km road to Swakopmund is good tar; slow down in morning fog and expect sand drift in afternoon wind.
- Never drive the Pelican Point spit or the Sandwich Harbour beach in a normal rental car.
