Things to do in Swakopmund
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Swakopmund
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall: dry, cool and clear, aligning with the best Etosha game viewing.
Best balance of clear skies, mild highs, good marine conditions and reliable desert tours.
Summer: warmer and livelier, flamingos at their best and seal pupping in November and December.
Festive season: town fills, prices spike and everything books out: book months ahead or avoid.
Windy periods can sandblast dune activities: operators reschedule, another reason for a buffer day.
What's on
- Swakopmund Karneval (Küska) usually March
German community carnival with parades and costumes, the most distinctively Swakopmund festival.
- Festive season / New Year mid-December to early January
Peak social season with full restaurants and New Year parties: worth timing for if booked early.
- Oktoberfest Windhoek late October
Namibia's big Oktoberfest is in Windhoek, not Swakopmund: it pairs with a Swakopmund trip the following week.
- Cape Cross seal pupping November to December
Colony at its most crowded and dramatic during pupping season.
- Walvis Bay flamingo peak November to April
Flamingo numbers build with regional rains, best after rain.
- Whale season June to November, best August to October

Where to stay in Swakopmund
The Mole / Old Town Centre
first trip, all-round base
Walk to almost every restaurant, cafe, museum and activity office, with the Mole's sheltered bay as the beach.
Vineta / Vineta North
families, self-drivers, quieter stays
Larger guesthouses and self catering in a calmer residential beachfront area, 15 to 25 minutes walk north.
Vogelstrand / Ocean View / Kramersdorf
value, quiet, self-drivers
Newer suburbs with good value and less fog inland at Kramersdorf, but no walk to dinner charm.
Think twice about
- Mondesa, Tamariskia and the DRC informal settlement
Residential township areas with limited lighting and visitor infrastructure: visit on a guided daytime tour, do not book tourist accommodation here.
- Walvis Bay as a Swakopmund base
A working port town 35 km south with good lagoon hotels but no walkable centre or cafe scene: sleep in Swakopmund and day trip.
- Isolated plots on the B2 / C34 highways or Mile 4 / Mile 14 sprawl
Kilometres out with nothing walkable and no taxi rank nearby: a trap for car-free travellers who pay for taxis all week.

Is Swakopmund safe?
- Centre, Mole and Vineta are safe to walk in daytime with normal awareness for bags and phones at markets.
- At night take a taxi your restaurant calls for longer trips: streets empty early and lighting is patchy.
- Property crime is the main risk: lock cars, leave nothing visible, use hotel safes and secure parking.
- Go to Mondesa and the townships guided and in daytime only, and ask permission before photographing people.
- Carry 3 plus litres of water per person for a desert day, offline maps and a charged phone: distances to help are long.
Swakopmund travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not sell this as a swim in the sea holiday: water is 12 to 16 degrees with strong currents.
- The National Marine Aquarium has been closed since October 2023: old guides still list it open.
- Jetty 1905 table limits and The Tug prices divide reviewers: book sunset seatings and order seafood.
- Agree craft prices before a carving is personalised with your name: a personalised item is one you have bought.
- Dune 7 is a single dune by a car park, not a wilderness experience: do not pay for a premium Dune 7 tour instead of Sandwich Harbour.
Getting around Swakopmund: public transport and more
- Walk the flat, compact centre. Bicycles work well in daytime.
- Taxis are phone booked or called by your hotel or restaurant: there is no Uber or Bolt of consequence here.
- Fly to Walvis Bay Airport, 35 km south, or drive the tarred B2 from Windhoek in about 4 hours.
- A rental car unlocks Moon Landscape, Dune 7, Cape Cross and Spitzkoppe: Sandwich Harbour needs a guided 4x4.
- Fog can delay flights, skydives and boats and slow the B2 and C34 early: build a buffer day.
