Things to do in Volcanoes National Park
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Volcanoes National Park
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season, the best trekking and the hardest permits. Kwita Izina fills Kinigi in early September.
Short dry season, the second window. February is often the sweet spot of conditions against availability.
Long rains, the hardest trekking with deep mud, the greenest forest, lower rates and the easiest permits.
Short rains, a shoulder not a closure. Treks run normally, trails get muddy and prices soften.
What's on
- Kwita Izina Usually September

- Umuganda last Saturday of every month, about 08:00 to 11:00
National community service morning in every month, listed here once. Shops close and movement is restricted.

Where to stay in Volcanoes National Park
Kinigi
trek mornings and luxury lodges
At park headquarters, so the 07:00 briefing means a short dark drive, and home to the ultra and luxury lodges.
Kinigi road
mid range comfort with town access
Between Musanze and Kinigi, close enough for an easy trek morning with more of a hotel feel than town.
Musanze
budget stays and town food
The real town 25 to 30 minutes from headquarters, with guesthouses, cafes and transport, at the cost of an earlier start.
Think twice about
- Within 10 km of the DRC border outside the park ranger system
The border is poorly marked and fighting in eastern Congo could affect nearby areas. Trek only with park rangers and do not wander near the border.
- Rubavu and Gisenyi as a side trip
A Congo border district on Lake Kivu. Treat it as a separate trip with its own checks, not a casual side trip from Kinigi.

What to book ahead
- Volcanoes National Park: months ahead

- Dian Fossey Tomb: weeks ahead
- Gorilla Guardians Village: a few days ahead
- Musanze Caves: a few days ahead
- Buhanga Eco Park: a few days ahead
- Mount Bisoke: weeks ahead

- Book the gorilla permit first, then the lodge, then transfers. Dry season permits sell out months ahead.

- Order the packed trek breakfast and lunch at check in the evening before, not on the morning.
Is Volcanoes National Park safe?
- Plastic carrier bags are banned nationwide and confiscated on arrival. Pack reusable bags.
- Umuganda community service closes shops and restricts movement on the last Saturday morning of each month, about 08:00 to 11:00.
- Ask before photographing people, and never photograph military, police, government buildings or border posts.
- Malaria risk at Kinigi altitude is relatively low for Rwanda but not zero. Take a travel clinic's advice for your whole itinerary.
Volcanoes National Park travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A gorilla trek sold as a day trip from Kigali means a 03:00 start and no recovery margin. Sleep at Kinigi or Musanze.
- A cheap permit offered outside the RDB system is not a permit.
- Do not stack a gorilla trek and a Bisoke climb on consecutive days unless you are genuinely mountain fit.
Getting around Volcanoes National Park: public transport and more
- Kigali to Kinigi is about 2.5 to 3 hours by road, and Musanze to Kinigi is 25 to 30 minutes.
- You need a vehicle on trek morning from headquarters to the trailhead, arranged by your lodge or operator.
- Public buses run Kigali to Musanze and moto taxis cover town, but neither solves a 06:00 trek start, so pre arrange the morning ride.
