Things to do in Musanze
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Musanze
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season, best trekking conditions and highest demand, so permits and Kinigi lodges sell out first.
Short dry season, the second good window, busy from late December into January with clearer Twin Lakes views.
Long rains, muddiest and hardest trekking, with fewer visitors and the reported low season permit discount on qualifying itineraries.
Short rains, muddy trails and lower demand, a workable shoulder choice if wet hiking is acceptable.
What's on
- Kwita Izina Usually September
Rwanda's annual gorilla naming ceremony at Kinigi, naming infant gorillas born in the past year.

Where to stay in Musanze
Kinigi
trek morning and luxury lodges
Closest to the park headquarters briefing, so the shortest pre-dawn transfer and the easiest Bisoke and Fossey starts.
Musanze town
value, restaurants and independent travel
Town hotels, the market, cafes and moto taxis, with a 25 to 30 minute booked drive to Kinigi for the briefing.
Twin Lakes
quiet and scenery on a rest day
Lake Burera and Ruhondo shores are scenic and calm, but the road to Kinigi is longer, so they suit non-trek nights best.
Think twice about
- Musanze District within 10 km of the DRC border
Stay on the Rwandan side, use the ranger system in the park, and never cross into the DRC.
- Unlit forest edge and border paths after dark
Borders in remote areas may not be well marked and crossings can close at short notice. Use a booked driver for pre-dawn and night travel.

Musanze travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Any offer of a free or unguided walk in the gorilla forest, or a gorilla trek without a Rwanda Development Board permit.
- Building a trip that only works if a date specific, effectively non-refundable gorilla permit can be moved.
- Comparing lodge quotes without checking per person versus per room pricing, which doubles some apparent bargains.
- Routing a Musanze trip through the DRC, which in 2026 could trigger denial of entry to Rwanda for foreign nationals.
Getting around Musanze: public transport and more
- Kinigi park headquarters is about 12 km and 25 to 30 minutes by 4x4 from Musanze town, and the park provides no transport.
- Report to the Kinigi briefing by 7:00 to 7:30am on every park day, and agree the 5am pickup with your driver the night before.
- Kigali to Musanze is about 2.5 hours by road, so sleep in Musanze or Kinigi the night before a trek, never in Kigali.
- Musanze town is walkable in daylight and moto taxis cover short hops, but park trailheads need a booked 4x4.
