Things to do in Rubavu
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Rubavu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season, the best months for beaches, boats, kayaking and Congo Nile Trail stages, with the clearest volcano views.
Short dry season, mostly dry and good for the lake, with festive pressure in December and a need to check the border position in the exact weeks.
Long rains peaking in April, with muddy trails, choppier boats and landslide risk on hill roads. The week after 7 April is a national week of mourning.
Short rains in bursts with sunny spells, greener tea fields at Pfunda, and lower crowds and prices.
What's on

- Umuganda Last Saturday of every month

Think twice about
- DRC border strip within 10 km, including the Grande Barriere area
The strip along the DRC border, in a zone of unrest across the frontier. The whole town sits inside it. Do not linger at the crossing, photograph it, or rely on it for any itinerary.
- Goma and the DRC side of the border
Goma has been held by AFC/M23 since January 2025, its airport has remained closed, and crossings can close at short notice, so do not plan a day trip across.

Is Rubavu safe?
- The town sits on the DRC border; keep a departure plan south by road to Karongi or Kigali that does not use the DRC.
- Never photograph military sites, government buildings, airports or the border crossing.
- Plastic bags and vapes are banned in Rwanda, and police may ask for identification, so carry a passport copy.
- On the lake, inspect the boat, wear a lifejacket, stay on the Rwandan side and start kayaking early before afternoon wind.
Rubavu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Building any plan that depends on the Grande Barriere crossing staying open or on Goma airport reopening.
- Treating the top Rubavu restaurant tier as capital city fine dining; the ladder here is short.
- Assuming older guidebook prices and hours for Rubavu still hold after two years of border disruption.
Getting around Rubavu: public transport and more
- Rubavu is about 3 to 4 hours by road from Kigali via Musanze, and about 1 hour south of Musanze town.
- Walk the lakeside in town, use moto taxis for Rubona and Nyamyumba, and agree the fare before riding.
- Confirm any lake transport south to Karongi on the ground rather than assuming a timetable.
