Is Tatev safe?
- Keep well clear of the eastern border area: roads near the border may be controlled by checkpoints or closed without notice.
- Goris, Halidzor and Tatev sit south west of Goris, away from the Azerbaijani border; Khndzoresk lies east of Goris, so stay on the main road and marked paths there.
- Stay on main roads and marked trails, do not photograph checkpoints, and treat gorge paths as slippery when wet.
Tatev travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Doing Tatev as a 14 hour Yerevan day trip when a Goris overnight makes it a relaxed morning.
- Leaving the cableway to your last day, when wind or maintenance can stop it with no second chance.
- Descending to the Devil's Bridge pools without agreeing any local guide price first.
- Khndzoresk means about 400 steps down and back up with little shade, so take water and avoid midday in summer.
Getting around Tatev: public transport and more
- Base in Goris and use hotel arranged taxis beyond town, with price, waiting and return agreed before setting off.
- Goris to Halidzor station is roughly 30 to 40 minutes by taxi, then 12 minutes by cableway to Tatev.
- Yerevan to Goris is about 250 km and 4 to 4.5 hours by road, with minibuses from Yerevan Southern Bus Station.
- Ride hailing coverage is thin in Syunik, so never rely on summoning a car at a gorge car park.
