Where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Things to do in Taichung, planned over three days
Best time to visit Taichung
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window, dry, warm and clear with the best mountain views.
Underrated winter window, dry and mild, best for food and hiking but watch air quality.
Very good spring weather, plum rain begins in May and the Mazu pilgrimage is in April.
Worst months, hot, humid, afternoon rain and typhoon risk, keep excursions flexible.

Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Taichung
National Taichung Theater
Toyo Ito cave like opera house with a free rooftop sky garden and the best dusk view over Xitun.
Miyahara
Restored eye clinic turned pastry hall famous for inventive ice cream, sun cakes and pineapple cakes.
Fourth Credit Union
Sister ice cream shop in a converted bank vault with the same flavours and a much shorter queue.
Calligraphy Greenway
A 3.6km linear park linking the science museum and fine arts museum through lawns, art and cafes.
Shenji New Village
Former dormitory compound now filled with independent makers, bakeries, coffee shops and studios.
PARK2 Caowu Square

National Museum of Natural Science
Huge science museum with dinosaurs and hands on exhibits, the highest value family half day in the city.
Where to stay in Taichung
West District / Calligraphy Greenway corridor
first trip, all-round base
Leafy and walkable with both national museums, Audit Village and the best cafes on one corridor.
Central District
one night transit stop and Sun Moon Lake buses
TRA station, Miyahara and Second Market are walkable and rooms are cheaper, though the area is grittier.
Xitun District
luxury hotels, malls and a taxi based trip
New money district by the theater and big malls, polished but with long blocks for pedestrians.
Fengjia area
students, night market fans and cheap rooms
Dozens of budget and mid range hotels within five minutes of Fengjia Night Market, alive until late.
North District / Yizhong
local student city feel on a budget
Yizhong market, Taichung Park and cheap eats with a more everyday Taichung feel than Xitun.
Think twice about
- Taichung TRA Station underpasses and oldest blocks east and southeast of the station
Most visibly run down pocket in central Taichung with ageing buildings, homeless people sleeping by the station and dim quiet streets late at night. Stay west of the station or in West District.
- HSR Taichung Station area, Wuri
Not in central Taichung, about 25 to 35 minutes south with almost nothing to walk to at night. Use it as a transit point, not a base.
- Fengjia innermost lanes on Wenhua Road
Market runs to about 1am, scooters run later and budget hotels on the road itself can have thin soundproofing. Stay a street back if you sleep lightly.
- Taichung Port, Wuqi and Qingshui coast
Industrial port area 45 plus minutes from the centre with very little for a visitor at night. Visit for Gaomei Wetlands, sleep in the city.

Is Taichung safe?
- Traffic is the real hazard, look both ways even on a green light for turning scooters and cars.
- Do not rent a scooter without a proper licence and real experience, charter a driver for excursion days instead.
- Air quality is worst November to March, check the forecast and carry a mask on bad AQI days.
- Crime is very low, use normal city care for bags in Fengjia crowds and phones on market tables.
Taichung travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Sun Moon Lake and Cingjing in one day tour gives about 90 minutes at each, pick one or overnight.
- Rainbow Village is 20 to 30 minutes, never build a half day around it alone.
- Zhongshe Flower Market and Carton King are photo stops that are skippable unless they are your specific interest.
- Miyahara at peak has a long queue for one scoop, Fourth Credit Union has the same ice cream with a shorter line.
Getting around Taichung: public transport and more
- Plan in taxi, bus and MRT hops between clusters and walk within each cluster, as districts are spread out.
- MRT Green Line runs from HSR Taichung through the western districts to Beitun but does not serve the TRA station or Fengjia directly.
- Buy an EasyCard for MRT, buses, YouBike and convenience stores and carry your destination in Chinese characters for taxi drivers.
- HSR Taichung and Taichung TRA stations are about 25 minutes apart, change at Xinwuri for the centre.
