Things to do in Kaohsiung
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kaohsiung
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months. Dry, sunny and mild, with hiking, cycling and hot springs all at their best.
Sleeper month. Heat breaks, rain eases and the Wannian Festival fills Lotus Pond.
Good but warming, with plum rain showers toward May. Start outdoor days early.
Worst months for most. Tropical heat, downpours, typhoon risk and peak dengue season.

Where to stay in Kaohsiung
Yancheng, Pier-2 and Love River
first trip, character and food
Pier-2, the Cijin ferry and old food streets on foot, with the Orange line and light rail for the rest.
Asia New Bay Area and Sanduo
luxury, harbour views
Flagship hotels by the Exhibition Center and Music Center on the light rail, glossier and less neighbourhood led.
Central Park and Formosa Boulevard
transport, value, short stays
Both MRT lines cross here, Central Park is a green lung and prices drop a tier versus the bayfront.
Aozihdi, Arena and Zuoying
north side sights, events, HSR arrivals
Handy for Ruifeng, the Arena, the fine arts museum and Lotus Pond, more residential and mall anchored.
Think twice about
- Kaohsiung Main Station immediate perimeter
Not dangerous, but a dated traffic heavy station edge with older hotels and some rough sleeping in underpasses. Sleep one MRT stop away instead.
- Zuoying HSR station surroundings
Sterile and highway scaled, far from the harbour sights, with a long MRT ride each way every day.
- E-Da World and far Dream Mall sprawl
Car oriented outlet and theme park edges with thin street life and long rides to Pier-2, Cijin and Lotus Pond.
- Cijin Island as a base
Ferry dependent for every city sight, very quiet at night and thin on hotels. Visit it, sleep in Yancheng.
