Early autumn repeats spring's mild walking weather with thinner crowds and colour in the Arasbaran forests.
Winter is cold and snowy, Sahand skiing normally runs January to mid March, and Kandovan and Babak become weather decisions.

What to book ahead

- Saint Stepanos Monastery: a few days ahead
- Babak Castle: a few days ahead
- Laleh Park Hotel: a few days ahead
- Tabriz El-Goli Pars Hotel: a few days ahead

- US, UK and Canadian nationals must arrange an escorted tour or approved guide throughout and should allow at least ten weeks.
- Around Nowruz in late March, domestic travel peaks for about two weeks and transport and hotels strain; book everything or avoid it.
- Confirm Sahand skiing, cable cars and mountain roads on the week, as all depend on weather and season.
Is Tabriz safe?
- Save this trip for when conditions change: visitors face a risk of arbitrary or wrongful detention, and consular support is extremely limited.
- Do not photograph military, government or border installations, especially on the Aras valley road to Saint Stepanos.
- Foreign cards do not work and ATMs do not accept them; the trip runs on cash in dollars or euros exchanged at licensed offices.
- Alcohol is prohibited by law with severe penalties, and bootleg alcohol carries a methanol poisoning risk.
- Women must wear a headscarf and loose clothing covering arms and legs in public by law; men should not wear shorts or sleeveless tops.
Tabriz travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Prices quoted in tomans are one tenth the rial figure; 500,000 tomans is IRR 5,000,000, so confirm the unit before paying.
- Older sources quoting the IRR 42,000 official dollar rate are not a rate any visitor can transact at; use licensed exchange offices.
- Darya Guesthouse and the larger Hotel Darya are different properties with similar names; confirm which one a booking means.
- The Blue Mosque is a magnificent ruin, not an intact mosque; visitors expecting Isfahan completeness can be underwhelmed.
Getting around Tabriz: public transport and more
- Walk the centre and bazaar; El Goli, Eynali and Laleh Park are taxi rides, and the city also has a metro line and buses.
- Kandovan is about 60 km and an hour to an hour and a half by hired car; public transport means a minibus to Osku then another ride.
- Saint Stepanos is about 150 km via Jolfa and Babak Castle about three hours via Kaleybar, both full driver days.
- The local ride hailing app is Snapp, but it needs a local SIM and local payment, so hotels and guides arrange most visitor rides.
