Things to do in Qeshm Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Qeshm Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best season: roughly 16 to 28 degrees C, migratory birds in the mangroves, and comfortable canyon and boat days.
Warming but workable. March brings turtle nesting and the Nowruz holiday peak with crowds and higher prices.
Hinge month, roughly 27 to 33 degrees C, fewer visitors, and turtle hatching begins in late May at Shibderaz.
Extreme heat and humidity, routinely 32 to 40 degrees C and above. Outdoor sightseeing only early or late, with low prices as the only compensation.
Cooling slowly through the month, with late October a shoulder-season value pick as humidity eases.
What's on
- Nowruz around 20 March and the holiday period following
Peak domestic travel on Qeshm: book everything ahead, expect crowded restaurants and higher prices.
- Hawksbill turtle nesting at Shibderaz from early March
Hawksbill turtles come ashore at Shibderaz to lay eggs, guarded by local patrols under strict visitor rules.
- Hawksbill turtle hatching at Shibderaz late May to mid-July
Community-led hatchling releases at Shibderaz, running into the worst summer heat in June and July.
Best things to do in Qeshm Island
Stars Valley
Eroded pillars and narrow passages near Berkeh Khalaf, best late in the day when shade and colour soften the rock.
Portuguese Castle
Ruined Portuguese fort walls and cannons above Qeshm harbour, a short stop best paired with the Geopark Museum.
Laft
A historic port village of windcatcher towers, reservoirs and the stone-cut Tala Wells, best at sunset over the channel.
Khorbas Caves
Part natural and part hand-carved chambers in coastal hills, visited for the tunnels and the view over the Gulf.
Qeshm Geopark Museum
The island geology and wildlife museum to do first, so the canyons, salt dome and mangroves make sense afterwards.
Goran Lenj Shipyard
A working yard near Laft where wooden lenj boats are still built and repaired by hand, a shrinking Gulf craft.
Where to stay in Qeshm Island
Qeshm town
first trip, short stays and no car
The ferry pier, museum, castle, most restaurants and the conventional hotels, at the cost of long drives west.
Tabl and Soheyli
nature-focused stays and mangroves
Eco-lodge villages by the Hara forest within reach of Chahkooh and Laft, where you eat where you sleep.
Suza and Shibderaz
south coast, Hengam boats and turtles
By the Naz Islands, the Hengam jetties and the turtle beach, with long drives to Qeshm town and the west end.
Think twice about
- Bandar Abbas as a Qeshm base
The mainland port is the ferry gateway, not the base. Sleeping there means a ferry crossing before every island sight.
- Far west end without a booked driver
The salt cave zone is about two hours from Qeshm town with thin transport back, so do not go without return transport agreed.

Is Qeshm Island safe?
- Visitors to Iran face a risk of arbitrary or wrongful detention, and consular support in country is extremely limited.
- Women must cover hair and wear loose clothing covering arms and legs in public by law, including on boats and beaches.
- Men and women cannot swim together at public beaches, women swim covered at separate areas, and much coast is not swimmable.
- Outside late October to April, heat and humidity are the main everyday risk, so carry water and avoid midday canyon visits.
Qeshm Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Prices are spoken in toman, and one toman is ten rials, so confirm toman or rial before paying every time.
- International bank and credit cards generally do not work in Iran, so do not depend on a foreign card or an ATM.
- Agree taxi and boat price, zone and waiting time in advance, and refuse deep salt-cave entry offered without a proper guide.
Getting around Qeshm Island: public transport and more
- Ferries and sea buses run from Bandar Abbas to Qeshm town, vehicle ferries run to Laft, and Qeshm has its own domestic airport.
- The island is about 135 km long, so hire a car with a local driver by the day and do one zone per day.
- Set each day's order around the tide table, because the mangrove boat, Naz Islands walk and Hengam crossing are tide-timed.
