Things to do in Song-Kul
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Song-Kul
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The season in full: every camp up, passes most reliable, water at its least cold. The only window to promise anyone.
Shoulders with care: camps set up through June and thin out into September. Confirm any camp or pass via CBT Kochkor.
The advertised edge, not the season: operator dates running mid May to mid October are best-case and weather dependent.
Closed to ordinary travel: camps gone, passes snowbound, winter access is supported expedition territory only.

Is Song-Kul safe?
- The Tajikistan border area is in the far south west of the country, a long way from Song-Kul; take extra care on any southern border loop.
- Altitude is the main risk: you sleep at about 3,016 m, so ascend slowly, hydrate, and descend if symptoms worsen.
- Emergency numbers are 112 general, 102 police and 103 ambulance, but there is no signal at the lake to call them from.
- Nights fall below freezing even in July, and most camps have no electricity or running water: pack and plan for both.
Song-Kul travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Song-Kul sold as a comfortable day trip from Bishkek: it is a very long driving day for a few shore hours.
- Any camp described as luxury: the ceiling at this lake is a good yurt with shared facilities and an outhouse.
- Arriving without small som notes and expecting change, cards or an ATM at a shore that has none.
Getting around Song-Kul: public transport and more
- There is no public transport to Song-Kul: go via Kochkor, Naryn or Kyzart, then a pre-arranged car or horses.
- Arrange the ride back before your driver leaves the shore, because there is no phone signal at the lake.
- Agree every fare in advance, carry a full tank out of Kochkor or Naryn, and avoid the pass roads at night.
