Things to do in Bishkek
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bishkek
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring blossom and mild days, with Nooruz in March and ideal lower trails by May.
Hot dry city summer, best for Song-Kul, Kol-Tor, high Ala Archa trails and Issyk-Kul swimming.
September is arguably the best month: golden, stable and harvest rich. November is grey and smog builds.
Cold ski and banya season and the cheapest hotels, with the worst winter air pollution.

repeat visitors, families and longer stays
Modern apartment hotels and newer malls near the foothills, with a daily taxi ride to the centre.
Think twice about

Pickpocketing hotspot with chaotic days and quiet, poorly lit, scruffy streets after dark.

Is Bishkek safe?
- Petty theft is the main risk. Do not walk alone late in unlit parks, underpasses or quiet microdistrict streets.
- Traffic is a bigger danger than people: drivers do not reliably yield and pavements are uneven or icy.
- Winter coal smoke can make air quality among the world's worst. Check the AQI daily in December to February.
Bishkek travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Pickpocketing at Osh Bazaar: use a front zipped bag, minimal cash and keep your phone away.
- Street taxis without the app quote foreigners multiples of the Yandex fare.
- Do not pay full day prices for Burana alone: the tower is 90 minutes on site, so bundle it or go independently.
Getting around Bishkek: public transport and more
- Walk the flat central grid. Use Yandex Go for fixed honest taxi fares and 2GIS for navigation and transit.
- Buses and marshrutkas cost a few tens of som, including the Ala Archa bus at about 50 som.
- Manas Airport is about 25 km northwest. Pre-book a transfer or use Yandex and avoid terminal touts.
