Best time to visit Naryn
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak season: yurt camps open, Kel-Suu at its best, passes clear, cold nights at the lakes.
Shoulder: Tash Rabat and Koshoy Korgon work well, Son-Kul camps open in late May and close through September.
Late shoulder: town and Tash Rabat still possible early in the month, high country closing down.
Nooruz on 21 March in a cold, muddy town: high excursions still effectively closed.
Spring thaw: town fine, roads and passes unreliable, camps not yet open.
Severe winter: January lows around minus 20 C, Dolon Pass disruptions, lakes are expedition only.

- Border crossings can close at short notice and photographing military or border facilities is illegal.
- The real risks here are altitude, severe cold, rough roads and distance from serious medical care: insure for altitude and evacuation.
- Carry your passport for border zone checkpoints, and carry enough cash som: no ATMs at the lakes or camps.
Naryn travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Yurt camp prices are usually per person by board basis, not per yurt: confirm what meals are included.
- Kel-Suu can partly drain and is frozen roughly October to May: ask locally about current water before paying for the trip.
- There is no public transport to Tash Rabat, Kel-Suu or Chatyr-Kul, whatever a timetable suggests.
Getting around Naryn: public transport and more
- Bishkek to Naryn is about five to six hours by marshrutka or shared taxi over the Dolon Pass.

- Every excursion beyond town needs a hired car or 4WD with driver: agree price, fuel and waiting time first.
- Download offline maps: signal disappears in the valleys and at Son-Kul, Tash Rabat and Kel-Suu.
