Things to do in Si Phan Don
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Si Phan Don
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and the best window: cool mornings, rideable paths, sandbanks emerging and the falls splitting over exposed rock.
Hot and burning season overlap: heat passes 40 degrees by April and Champasak haze can reach unhealthy readings in March.
Pi Mai, Lao New Year, in mid April brings water throwing, full buses and closed offices.
Wet season: the river can spread 14 km wide, smaller islands vanish, paths flood, kayaking is curtailed and the falls run at full power.
End of Buddhist Lent brings Lai Heua Fai illuminated boats and boat racing on the Mekong in the Champasak area.
What's on
- Pi Mai (Lao New Year) mid April
Water throwing, full transport and closed offices across Laos, including the islands.
- Lai Heua Fai and boat racing, end of Buddhist Lent October full moon, set locally
Illuminated boat processions and Mekong boat races in the Champasak area, liveliest on the Don Khong riverfront.
Best things to do in Si Phan Don
Khone Phapheng Falls
The widest waterfall in the world, where the whole Mekong drops over a 10.8 km ledge system south of Don Khon.
Li Phi Falls
A fierce run of chutes on Don Khon's west side, with fenced viewpoints, a river bar and a small dry season beach.
Khone Pasoi Falls
A quieter falls and rapids on Don Khon's east side, reached by a suspension footbridge through rice fields.
Historic Bridge, Don Det - Don Khon
The old French railway bridge linking Don Det and Don Khon, the daily crossing that makes the two islands one trip.
Old French Locomotive
A rusting steam locomotive at Ban Hang Khon, the main survivor of the 1890s portage railway around the falls.
Old French Port
The old colonial port at Don Det's northern end, where cargo was loaded back onto boats above the rapids.
Wat Chom Thong
The oldest temple on Don Khong, a working wat at the north end of Muang Khong best visited at dawn or dusk.
Muang Khong Market
Don Khong's dawn market, where boats from the islands unload fish and produce from about 4:30 in the morning.
Where to stay in Si Phan Don
Don Khong (Muang Khong)
quiet, facilities and a local town
The largest island has the dawn market, the oldest temple, the ring road ride and the archipelago's two fullest hotels.
Don Det
traveller scene, sunsets and cheap beds
The backpacker hub has a sunrise side and a sunset side, the most restaurants, and the boat landing for Nakasang.
Don Khon
the falls and the best all round base
Quieter than Don Det and linked by the French bridge, with Li Phi and Khone Pasoi falls on the island itself.
Think twice about
- Mekong channels downstream of Don Det and Don Khon
Both islands sit a few kilometres above major falls and the current is strong, unmarked and lethal. Swim only in hotel pools, the Li Phi beach in dry season, and calm side channels where locals swim.
- Don Det pier and north tip bar strip
The only noisy ground in the archipelago at night. Sleep on the sunrise side, the southern half of Don Det, or on Don Khon if quiet matters.

A small Don Khon garden kitchen cooking everything fresh to order, known for tom yum, laap and Massaman curry.

A small Don Khon restaurant making its own pizzas and sausages in house, a real feat on an island fed by boat.
Mama Leuah Restaurant
By consensus the best kitchen on Don Det, European and Lao dishes on a river terrace on the sunrise side.
Kea's Backpackers Paradise Restaurant & Bar
The social centre of Don Det's sunset side, famous across the circuit for its pumpkin burger and hammock terrace.
Street View Restaurant
The sit down upgrade on Don Det's main strip, with a wide menu and a notch more polish than the bungalow cafes.
Crazy Gecko
Don Det's daytime cafe for good coffee, breakfasts and salads in a garden setting away from the pier.
4000 Island Bar
A lively Don Det bar that is also a decent cheap kitchen, known for Indian dishes and bar food at budget prices.

Is Si Phan Don safe?
- Stay on paths and established ground off the beaten track because unexploded ordnance is a real legacy in Champasak Province.
- The nearest hospital for serious cases is in Pakse, about three to four hours away by boat and road. Carry evacuation insurance.
- There are no ATMs on Don Det or Don Khon. Bring more cash in small kip notes than you think you need, from Pakse.
Si Phan Don travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Dolphin trips are still sold at Ban Hang Khon, but the last transboundary pool dolphin died in February 2022 and the species is extinct in Laos.
- Older guidebooks and signs still advertise dolphins, tubing parties and a Don Det late scene that no longer matches the islands.
- The ATMs at Ban Nakasang are often empty or out of service. Withdraw kip in Pakse instead.
Getting around Si Phan Don: public transport and more
- Reach Don Det and Don Khon by bus from Pakse to Ban Nakasang, about three hours, then a 15 to 20 minute boat. Boats stop at dark.
- Don Khong is reached by boat near Hat Xai Khoun or by road over the bridge to its south tip, then up to Muang Khong.
- On Don Det and Don Khon you walk or rent a bicycle. Don Khong has paved roads and a roughly 30 km ring.
- Carry a head torch: paths on Don Det and Don Khon are unlit and the walk home from dinner is in the dark.
