Best time to visit Bolaven Plateau
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months. Cool and dry, roads at their best, coffee harvest live, falls full early in the period.
Hot on the plain, kind on the plateau. Pi Mai, Lao New Year, falls in mid April with closures.
First rains and village rocket festivals on varying dates. Falls begin to roar and tracks are mostly passable.
Wet season. Most powerful falls and greenest country, but dirt spurs can be impassable and swims dangerous.
Rains retreat, falls stay powerful, roads recover. Ok Phansa brings candle processions and fireboats below.

Is Bolaven Plateau safe?
- Ride only if licensed and experienced, helmet always, never after dark. Plateau medical care is basic, serious cases go to Pakse.
- Stay on established paths because of unexploded ordnance. Paksong district has active clearance work in 2026.
- Swim only where locals swim that day, never at Tad Fane or Tad Soung, and never alone after heavy rain.
- Avoid homemade spirits because of methanol risk. Buy only from reputable licensed sellers and check seals.
Bolaven Plateau travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Day tripping the plateau from Pakse wastes the day on the climb. Sleep in Tad Lo or Paksong.
- Tad Lo elephant bathing uses chained animals and draws distressing reviews. Do not pay for it.
- The big loop's Sekong to Attapeu leg has rougher roads and divides riders. A small loop done slowly often wins.
Getting around Bolaven Plateau: public transport and more
- Rent bikes or hire a driver in Pakse, the gateway. On the plateau, fuel up in Pakse, Paksong and Thateng.
- Download offline maps before the plateau. Coverage is patchy and remote fall pins, notably Tad Tayicseua, are unreliable.
- Carry kip in small notes. Falls, farms, parking and village kitchens are cash only.
