Things to do in Luang Prabang
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Luang Prabang
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best weather, cool dry and clear, waterfalls flowing and trekking and golf at their best.
Lush and green with crowds thin, late rain showers and the Festival of Light late in the month.
Wet season, green and cheap, heavy showers, muddy trekking, August typically wettest.
Burning season and highest heat, smoke traps in the bowl and outdoor exertion becomes a health decision.
What's on
- Boun Lai Heua Fai / Boun Ok Phansa - Festival of Light October, at the full moon ending Buddhist Lent
Illuminated boats, lanterns and krathong on both rivers for the end of Buddhist Lent.
- Pi Mai Lao - Lao New Year mid-April, roughly 14-16 April
Processions, sand stupas and town wide water throwing in the hottest week.

Mekong Riverside
river views and sunset

best value still on the peninsula

Across the Nam Khan - Ban Phan Luang
peace, gardens and pool resorts
Leafy and village feeling at lower prices, but the bridge walk or shuttle shapes every trip in.
Ban Mano / Ban That Luang and the southern resort belt
space, pools and big heritage hotels
Quieter nights and better facilities per dollar, with a tuk tuk habit for dinners.
Out of town on the rivers / in the hills
second stay splurge
Spectacular destination resorts that are shuttle dependent, best as final nights after town nights.
Think twice about
- Around the Laos-China Railway station and far southern suburbs
Well out of town with little you can walk to, stranding you into tuk tuk dependence for everything.
- Directly on the Night Market stretch of Sisavangvong Road
Loud from market set up to pack down, with crowd flow past your door if you are a light sleeper.
- Across the Mekong in Ban Xieng Mene
Ferry dependent for every dinner and dawn start, and the ferry does not run all night.
- Unbranded far flung resort listings 8km+ out with no shuttle
The saving is small in Luang Prabang and the cost is walkable temples, markets and tour pickups.
