Things to do in Setúbal
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Setúbal
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm, boats and wineries in full operation, September sea at its least cold and no August crush.
Peak season: everything open but busiest and priciest, with Arrabida beach road restrictions in force.
Mild but wettest months: the city, market and wineries keep their real life, but beach days are walks, not swims.
What's on
- Feira de Sant'Iago late July to early August, 24 July to 3 August in 2025
One of Portugal's largest popular festivals, over 400,000 visitors, with concerts, crafts and gastronomy taverns.
- Setubal International Theatre Festival Usually late August
The Festa do Teatro, running since 1995 and centred on Teatro Estudio Fontenova, spilling into streets and small venues.
- Sardine season and summer popular festivals June into July

Best things to do in Setúbal
Mercado do Livramento

Forte de São Filipe
A star shaped fortress above the city with a tiled chapel and the best sunset view over the Sado and Troia.
Igreja de Jesus
Credited as the first Manueline church, with six twisted columns cut from Arrabida marble and the city museum beside it.
Museu do Trabalho Michel Giacometti
A former sardine canning factory turned museum of work, with the canning line preserved and a 1900s grocery upstairs.
Praça de Bocage
The city's living room square, ringed by cafes and city hall, and the start of a wander through the Baixa and Troino.
Casa da Baía - Centro de Promoção Turística

Where to stay in Setúbal
Historic Centre: Baixa, Praca de Bocage and Troino
first trip, all round base
Walk to the market, the choco frito houses, the dolphin boats and the Troia ferry, in a lived in, slightly scruffy centre.
Avenida Luisa Todi and the central waterfront
convenience and estuary views
Sea facing position between the market and the ferry terminals, with easier parking and some traffic noise at the front.
Arrabida foothills and the western edge
resort style stay with a car
Vineyard and hillside properties with pools and estuary views, where nothing is walkable for dinner.
Troia Peninsula
beach resort stay
Dunes, boardwalks and resort hotels across the ferry, a beach holiday rather than a Setubal base.
Think twice about
- Port and industrial fringe east of the centre
Empty, unlit feeling and charmless at night. Do not book out there for a saving or walk back along port roads late.
- Troia resort strip as a Setubal base
Every city dinner costs a ferry timetable and the car ferry is expensive. Choose Troia for the resort, not for Setubal.

Is Setúbal safe?
- No central neighbourhood is identified as unsafe for visitors; the plain caution is the empty port fringe at night.
- Taxi back from the Forte and Albarquel after dark if you are on foot, as the hillside roads are quiet and unlit.
- Between Galapos and Galapinhos the rocky crossing is slippery and cut off at mid tide.
- Carry water on Arrabida trails in summer; there is little to buy on the shadeless ridge. Emergency number 112.
Setúbal travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Driving to the Arrabida coves in summer, when beach roads close to private cars in the middle of the day.
- Visiting Mercado do Livramento after lunch, when the fish hall is being washed down.
- Ordering grilled fish without confirming the price per kilo and the weight of the fish.
- Treating Troia as a cheaper Setubal: resort prices, thin dining and a ferry to every city restaurant.
Getting around Setúbal: public transport and more
- Fertagus trains run from Lisbon Roma-Areeiro to Setubal about every 30 minutes in about an hour.
- The centre, market, waterfront and ferry terminals are one flat walkable web.
- For Arrabida coves in summer, take Carris Metropolitana buses toward Figueirinha or Creiro and the free seasonal shuttle.
- There are two Troia ferry services with different terminals: a foot passenger catamaran and a car ferry that also carries bicycles.
