Things to do in Aveiro
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Aveiro
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, the best all round window. Warm 19 to 25C, long evenings, salt harvest restarting and uncrowded beaches.
Summer festival, crowd and wind peak. Highs 25 to 28C, salt harvest in full swing and beaches best in mornings.
Autumn connoisseur window. September keeps summer water without crowds, Bairrada harvest, October brings rain and surf.
Winter quiet, cheap and atmospheric. Highs 14 to 17C, rain, flooded salt pans and good birdwatching, beach largely shut.
Best months overall: late May to June and mid September, with mid July as the deliberate festival choice.

Where to stay in Aveiro
Beira-Mar / Praça do Peixe and Central Canal (Rossio)
first trip, all-round base
Everything is within a 15 minute walk, from moliceiro piers and fish market to dinner quarter and station.
Fonte Nova / Meliá side of the centre
spa, pool, parking and business trips
Five to ten minutes from Rossio across the canal, more spacious and businesslike, a bridge walk to dinner.
Costa Nova / Barra
summer beach holidays
Striped houses and surf at your door, but a 15 minute drive from Aveiro centre and bleak in winter.
Ílhavo / Vista Alegre
luxury stay as an experience
Aveiro's best luxury hotel in the porcelain village, with museum visits on site and a taxi into Aveiro.
Think twice about
- A25 / Forum Aveiro shopping centre edge
Charmless and car oriented, marooned from the canal centre at night with an unpleasant walk to the salt pans.
- Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho, station avenue
A through road that empties at night and is the least atmospheric place to sleep, not a safety problem.
- Costa Nova / Barra in winter
Atlantic wind, fog and many seasonal businesses shut. Bleak and isolating as a winter base without a car.
- São Jacinto as a base
Ferry dependent or a very long drive around the lagoon. One missed last ferry strands you across the ria.

Is Aveiro safe?
- Watch bags in summer canal crowds and around the station, the main pickpocket risk.
- Swim at lifeguarded areas at Barra and Costa Nova. The Atlantic has real currents and cold water.
- The afternoon nortada wind arrives most summer days, so carry a layer even on hot days.
- Follow the signed cycle route to the salt pans rather than improvising across the busy highway junction.
- Rooms facing Praça do Peixe can be noisy on weekend nights. Ask for a rear room if you sleep light.
Aveiro travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Venice of Portugal framing sets a false scale. Aveiro has a handful of canals, not a canal city.
- A rushed half day tour bus stop gets the postcards and none of the food, salt pans or Beira-Mar evening.
- The Museu de Arte Nova interior is slight. See the facade and tea house and save the ticket if time is tight.
- Canalfront Rossio terraces charge for the view. The same fish is better and cheaper in Beira-Mar.
- Buy ovos moles from a named confeitaria with the protected designation, not generic souvenir shops.
- The couvert placed on your table is charged if you eat it. Decline it politely if you do not want it.
Getting around Aveiro: public transport and more
- Walk the flat compact centre. Everything central is walkable in 15 minutes.
- Use free BUGA bikes for the salt pans, university and Passadiços boardwalks.
- Aveiro Bus covers Barra and Costa Nova. Trains run 30 to 40 minutes to Porto and about 2.5 hours to Lisbon.
- A car is only worth it for Ílhavo, Costa Nova and a day trip in one day, or for Arouca and Buçaco.
