Things to do in Cascais
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Cascais
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall. Warm, sea swimmable by June, crowds and prices below August, and September has the warmest sea.
Peak. Everything open and festivals on, with highest prices, fullest beaches and booking essential.
Shoulder, also late October. Hiking, golf and surf prime and good value, but the sea is cold for most.
Worst for a beach holiday. Mild but rainy with storms and short days, best for cheap golf and empty museums.

Flat and pedestrianised, with station, beaches, market and museums within a 10 minute walk and no car needed.
Museum Quarter / Gandarinha / Santa Marta

Grand hotels and Tamariz beach one train stop east, slightly cheaper than central Cascais for similar quality.
Quinta da Marinha
golf, outdoors and families with a car
A resort and golf neighbourhood in the natural park, superb for golf but you will drive to dinner in town.
Guincho / Cresmina coast
surf, kitesurf and disconnecting

- São Domingos de Rana

- Guincho and Cabo da Roca road in winter without a car
Buses thin out and waits grow in winter wind and rain, so plans can be stranded without a car.

Not unsafe, but tired and empty out of season. Pick Monte Estoril residential streets or the seafront instead.

Is Cascais safe?
- Emergency number is 112. Cascais is very safe and violent crime against visitors is rare.
- Petty theft and car break ins at tourist car parks and unattended beach bags are the real risk. Never leave valuables in cars.
- Atlantic rip currents at Guincho and Carcavelos, rogue waves at Boca and Cabo, and cliff falls at Ursa after rain are serious risks.
Cascais travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Bay front restaurants with touts and photo menus on Avenida Valbom charge the poorest value in town.
- Fish is sold by weight, so confirm the whole fish or platter total before cooking, and refuse couvert you do not eat.
- Boca do Inferno souvenir stalls and inflated reseller tickets for Sintra palaces. Buy Sintra tickets on the official site.
- Listings called Cascais can be inland and car dependent, so check the map pin, not the headline.
Getting around Cascais: public transport and more
- Take the train from Cais do Sodre in Lisbon, about 40 minutes and about 2.55 EUR one way, and walk in flat compact Cascais.
- Bolt and Uber are cheap for Guincho, Cabo da Roca, Quinta da Marinha and Sintra, often best for 3 to 4 people.
- Bus 1624 links Cascais and Sintra via Cabo da Roca. Do not bring a car for a centre based stay, parking is scarce.
- Calcada pavements are slippery when wet, so wear shoes with grip.
