Things to do in Poznan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Poznan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm enough for Malta, the river and terraces; June is the cultural peak, September thins crowds.
Warm summers, 22 to 28 C with thunderstorms; Lake Malta, city beaches and KontenerArt run May to September.
Worst months mid November to February, dark by 16:00 and cold, except 11 November; January and February are cheapest and emptiest.
March is the shoulder season dud: no longer winter, not yet spring, and the national park is muddiest.
Golden early autumn; Korknik arboretum and the national park are at their best for colour in mid October.

Jezyce

quiet and atmosphere

Grand hotels around the Imperial Castle and the Fair, ten minutes from the station and 15 from the square.
Lake Malta / Nowe Miasto
families and sport-focused trips

Think twice about
- Poznan Glowny station and Dworzec Glowny underpass area
The city's shabbiest feeling pocket after dark, with transient drinking groups and panhandling. Fine to transit, poor for a hotel.
- Far Wilda and far Lazarz residential blocks
Some run down tenements and no visitor reason to base there: few hotels, no sights and a tram commute to everything.
- Rataje / Polanka tower-block estates around Posnania mall
Anonymous, traffic heavy and charmless for a short stay, with nothing a tourist needs based there. Stay on the west bank.
- Gorczyn / Glogowska far end near Enea Stadion
Heaving, loud and tram crushed around matchdays. Fine if going to the match, avoid as a base otherwise.

Poznan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Eating on Stary Rynek by default: most terraces charge for the view, except Vis A Vis and Rynek 95.
- Termy Maltanskie on a rainy Saturday afternoon: go weekday mornings or after 18:00 instead.
- Uncertified St Martin's croissants from souvenir shops are drier and lighter on poppy seed.
- Treating Stary Browar as a half day destination: it is a beautiful mall, worth about an hour.
Getting around Poznan: public transport and more
- Walk first: Old Town, Castle District and Srodka are within a 25 minute walking web.
- Use trams for everything else and buy tickets in the jakdojade app; a 24 hour ticket is the default good buy.
