Things to do in Krakow
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Krakow
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months plainly: May and September for weather, manageable crowds and everything open.
Winter: Christmas Market to 1 January, then Jan and Feb are coldest, darkest and cheapest, a museums and food trip.
Spring: Easter Market in April, blossom in the Planty, and May at 15 to 22C with the busy Majówka long weekend.
Summer: peak crowds, prices and sell outs, with festivals, Zakrzówek pools, rafting and cycling at their best.
Autumn: September keeps warmth without crowds, October turns golden, November is grey, quiet and cheap.
Worst month for crowds and prices at the headline sights, especially late July to August weekends.
Worst months for cold and dark if your trip depends on daylight and outdoor time.

Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Krakow
Rynek Główny
Europe's largest medieval town square, ringed by burgher houses with the Cloth Hall in the middle.
St Mary's Basilica
Veit Stoss's carved wooden altarpiece under a blue and gold ceiling, with the hourly hejnał from the tower.
Wawel Royal Castle
Poland's coronation hill castle with State Rooms, Treasury and courtyards above the Vistula.
Wawel Cathedral
Royal coronations and tombs, plus the Sigismund Bell tower you climb and touch for luck by tradition.

Where to stay in Krakow
Old Town
best first trip base
Everything walkable inside the Planty ring, with quiet side streets off the Rynek for sleeping.
Kazimierz
food, bars and repeat visitors
Most of the Eat list and the classic bars at your door, with a lived in feel the Old Town lacks at night.
Stradom / Wesoła
quiet central compromise
Between the Old Town and Kazimierz or just east of the centre, residential and cheaper with no scene of its own.
Podgórze / Zabłocie
budget and local base if you accept a bridge
Cheaper and quieter across the Vistula, near Schindler's Factory and MOCAK, with Kazimierz a short walk over the footbridge.
Kleparz / Kraków Główny station area
early trains, day trips and families
Residential and good value north of the walls, unbeatable for train day trips and early airport trains.
Think twice about
- Rynek Główny itself, Floriańska, Szewska and Grodzka's bar stretch
A noise warning, not a safety warning: stag party and club promoter streets, loud until 3 to 4am on weekends. Two streets back fixes it.
- Nowa Huta as a base
Not dangerous, just impractical: 30 to 40 minutes by tram from the Rynek, few basic hotels, and the district goes quiet early.
- Far outskirts apartment stock in Ruczaj, Prądnik and motorway side aparthotels
The nightly saving is eaten by tram and taxi time on every outing, and there is no neighbourhood to come home to.

Is Krakow safe?
- Krakow is genuinely safe apart from the strip club pattern. Realistic risks are pickpockets in Rynek crowds, packed trams and the station.
- Watch your drink in any venue a promoter steered you into, and use Bolt, Uber or licensed taxis with a displayed rate card.
- Jaywalking and public drinking outside licensed terraces are both fined. Emergency number is 112.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Krakow travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Strip clubs are the city's one dangerous scam: drink spiking and extreme overcharging follow promoter offers of free entry. Do not go at all.
- Rynek front restaurants charge double for the view and serve mediocre Polish food. Eat one street away instead.
- Auschwitz plus Wieliczka in one day combi tours mean a pre dawn pickup, a rushed memorial and 380 stairs. Split them if you can.
- Old Town kantor exchanges hide the cost in a wide spread, golf buggy tours are poor value on flat compact streets, and Cloth Hall amber is often tourist priced plastic.
Getting around Krakow: public transport and more
- Walk the Old Town, Kazimierz and Podgórze triangle, then use trams for Nowa Huta, the station and day trip stations.
- Buy tram and bus tickets in the Jakdojade app or at machines and validate. A 24, 48 or 72 hour city card bundles transport with museums.
- Airport train from Balice to Kraków Główny takes about 17 minutes. Bolt and Uber are the door to door alternative.
- Poland uses the złoty, PLN, not the euro. Always pay in PLN and use bank ATMs, avoiding Euronet style standalone machines.
