Things to do in Ponta Delgada
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ponta Delgada
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: giant whale migration peaks April to May, shoulder prices and crowds, thermal pools at their most atmospheric.
June is the sweet spot: long days, São João, pre peak prices and the islet ferry running.
Peak and priciest, hire cars sell out, hydrangeas peak from mid July to early August.
Warmest sea of the year, to about 23 degrees, and locals swimming month, with peak pressure easing.
The quiet fade: warm sea and humpbacks into early October, then more rain. Late November is the dullest window.
Green, empty and thermal: cheapest flights and hotels, steaming pools in cold air, no islet or ocean swimming focus.

Ponta Delgada travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Sete Cidades on a cloudy day just because it is on the plan: in fog the top sight is a grey car park. Swap days.
- The abandoned Monte Palace hotel at Vista do Rei is private and deteriorating. Admire it from outside only.
- Souvenir markups: buy pineapple at the plantation or market, cheese at the market and tea at Gorreana.
Getting around Ponta Delgada: public transport and more
- Rent a car: the centre is walkable and the airport is 5 to 10 minutes away, but buses are infrequent and do not serve trailheads.
- Book hire cars early for summer, as automatics are scarce and cars sell out island wide before hotels do.
- Check the SpotAzores live webcams over breakfast and order the day by what is clear, not by a fixed plan.
