Things to do in Ocho Rios
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ocho Rios
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best: driest, least humid, calmest seas, everything open, with top prices and the heaviest cruise calendar. February is the pick.
Shoulder: warmer, greener and cheaper, with more frequent brief showers. May and June are the first rainy peak, so waterfalls can be cancelled by high water. November is the value sweet spot.
Hot and humid in hurricane season, with local stage shows around Emancipation and Independence in late July and early August.
Worst: peak hurricane season, heaviest rainfall and highest humidity, some small hotels close for maintenance, and prices are the year's lowest.
What's on
- Reggae Month February
Island wide reggae celebrations through February.
- Bob Marley Birthday 6 February
Celebrated at Nine Mile itself, the single best date for that trip.
- Jamaica Carnival April
Centred on Kingston, about 1 hour 45 minutes away, a long day or overnight add on, not an Ocho Rios event.
- Ocho Rios Jazz Festival June
June traditionally brings the festival, editions have varied, confirm the current year's programme.
- Reggae Sumfest mid-July
The island's biggest reggae festival in Montego Bay, about 90 minutes west.
- Ocho Rios Seafood Festival late July/early August
In the same window as Emancipation and Independence, confirm the year.

Festive, packed and premium priced.
Best things to do in Ocho Rios
Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls)
Turquoise limestone pools, rope swings and ledge jumps on the White River, guided across slick rock.
Dunn's River Falls
A 600 foot terraced cascade you climb in a guided chain from the beach to the top.
Bob Marley's Nine Mile
Marley's birthplace and mausoleum in the hills, toured with Rastafari guides who sing and tell the family story.
Green Grotto Caves
A cool, level limestone cave walk past Taino, Spanish and nightclub history to an underground lake.
Konoko Falls and Park
A smaller climbable waterfall with gardens, museum and aviaries, far calmer than Dunn's River.
Fern Gully
A scenic drive through a former riverbed tunnelled by hundreds of species of tree ferns.
Shaw Park Botanical Gardens
Hillside gardens with a waterfall, plantings and sea views just outside town.
Coyaba River Garden
A river walk, small history museum and koi ponds, the garden stop to pick if you only do one.
Where to stay in Ocho Rios
East of town, Mammee Bay / Tower Isle corridor
first trip, all-round and luxury base
The best properties on calmer, prettier coves, with Dunn's River and Oracabessa a short taxi away.
Runaway Bay
quieter, better-value beach base
A nicer natural beach than Ocho Rios proper, with Green Grotto and the golf club on the doorstep.
Town edge / Main Street resort strip
short stays and convenience
Big all inclusives near town eating and the marina, buying logistics rather than serenity or beach quality.
The hills above town
villas, groups and longer trips
Cooler air, big views and staffed pool villas on the Fern Gully road, Shaw Park and Exchange, with a driver needed.
Think twice about
- Main Street / DaCosta Drive town core
Loud and congested by day, the centre of persistent touting, and emptied and poorly lit at night in a small unrated guesthouse. Do not walk this core alone after dark.
- Isolated hillside rentals with no staff, no gate and no agency
An unstaffed house on an unlit rural lane is a bad base. Book the staffed, agency managed version instead, and check who is on site at night.
- Listings marketed as Ocho Rios that are actually in St. Ann's Bay or Discovery Bay
Decent towns but 15 to 30 minutes west with little visitor infrastructure, so taxi fares eat the room saving. Check the map pin, not the listing title.

What to book ahead
- Bob Marley's Nine Mile: a few days ahead
- Frenchman's Cove: a few days ahead
- Blue Mountains: a few days ahead
- Miss T's Kitchen: a few days ahead
- Stush in the Bush: months ahead
- Christopher's at Hermosa Cove: a few days ahead
- Stush in the Bush needs weeks to months, non-negotiable. Reserve Miss T's for dinner and Sunday lunch.
- Book Nine Mile, Mystic Mountain and private catamarans days ahead in peak season and on ship days.
- Dunn's River and Blue Hole need timing, not reservations: opening time and a check of the cruise ship calendar first.
- Jamaica Inn and small boutiques book out for February and Christmas and New Year far in advance. Book group dinners at Miss T's and Evita's well ahead.
Is Ocho Rios safe?
- Town walking is a daytime activity. After dark taxi door to door, keep jewellery and phones discreet, and do not walk beaches at night outside a lit, guarded resort stretch.
- Petty risks are bag snatching and pickpocketing in crowds and hustle scams around the pier gates, craft market and Main Street.
- Obey falls guides and do not swim rivers the morning after heavy mountain rain, when Blue Hole and the White River run brown and fast.
- Use the hotel safe and buy insurance covering medical evacuation. Check your government Jamaica advisory for parish level detail before travel.
Ocho Rios travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Pier gate and Main Street hustle: tour, taxi and ganja offers, bracelets gifted then charged for, and remember me from your hotel lines. Smile, say no thank you, I am all set, and walk on.
- At Blue Hole use the established entrance and an assigned guide, and agree extras like photos and extended routes in advance.
- The Dunn's River exit craft market sells intensely by design. A purchase is never the price of leaving.
- Dolphin Cove is popular and professionally run but ethically contested and expensive once photo packages are added. Do not do it instead of Blue Hole.
- Timeshare free breakfasts cost you a morning. Street currency changers improvise bad rates, use an official cambio or bank ATM for JMD.
Getting around Ocho Rios: public transport and more
- Sangster International in Montego Bay is the main gateway, 90 minutes to 2 hours east. Pre-book a hotel shuttle, Knutsford Express coach or licensed private driver.
- Use licensed taxis with red plates, from hotel desks or the JUTA and JCAL cooperatives, and agree the fare for the whole job including waiting before you move.
- Keep the same named private driver all week. A good driver for a waterfall day is the best money in the trip.
- Route taxis are cheap and fun for a short daylight hop with local help, but not for excursion days.
- Driving is on the left. The coast highway is good, but hill roads to Nine Mile and Blue Hole are narrow, potholed in places and unlit.
- Carry small bills in USD and JMD. Cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants, cash rules everywhere else.
