Things to do in Montego Bay
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Montego Bay
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry peak season: least rain, calmest seas, highest prices and crowds. Book everything early.
Smart value shoulder: mostly dry early, afternoon showers building, prices down, lobster off part of the window.
Hot, humid family season. Reggae Sumfest in mid July spikes prices that week.
Cheapest and riskiest: peak hurricane season and the heaviest rain. Buy flexible bookings and real insurance.
Recovery shoulder: rains ease and prices have not hit peak, one of the best balanced windows.

What to book ahead

- For 2026 to 2027 trips, first confirm your hotel is open for your dates in writing, given staggered post hurricane reopenings.
- Book Sugar Mill and Houseboat Grill dinners days ahead in season, and golf tee times well ahead, direct for better green fees.
- Book the Luminous Lagoon for the darkest night of your stay, and excursions 1 to 3 days ahead with hotel pickup.

Is Montego Bay safe?
- Tourist area crime is mostly petty: hustle, overcharging and pickpocketing.
- Base in Rose Hall, Freeport or the Hip Strip, use the room safe and keep jewellery and phone flashing minimal outside resorts.
- Travel in pairs at night and watch drinks, as you would in any party city. Hustle is not danger: a firm, friendly no usually ends it.
Montego Bay travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Resort desk excursion pricing can cost far more than booking the same seat direct. Buy the convenience knowingly.
- Transport only excursion versions exclude raft and admission fees payable in cash on site. Read what is included.
- Fresh lobster offered in the spring closed season is illegal or frozen passed off. Good kitchens take it off the menu.
- Treat Margaritaville as a slide and a drink, not a dinner destination, and politely keep walking past airport kerb tour pitches.
Getting around Montego Bay: public transport and more
- The airport is 5 to 10 minutes from the Hip Strip and 15 to 25 from Rose Hall. Agree every taxi fare before the car moves.
- Use licensed red plate taxis or a hotel called driver, then keep that driver's number for the whole trip.
- Walk the Hip Strip by day and early evening only. After dark, taxi door to door between areas.
- Self driving is possible on the north coast highway but night driving between towns is discouraged by every source.
