Is Kingston safe?
- Kingston has real violent crime concentrated in specific neighbourhoods. The US Level 2 advisory (2026) lists parts of Kingston, including Trench Town, Tivoli Gardens and Arnett Gardens, as do-not-travel. Stay uptown (New Kingston, Liguanea), use hotel-arranged transport, never walk at night, and visit downtown sights with a guide. Emergency: police 119, fire and ambulance 110.
Kingston travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Paying in US dollars at local businesses always uses a worse rate than the bank rate.
- Unlicensed guides who attach themselves downtown: polite but firm no; use arranged guides.
- Dunn's River Falls is two hours each way from Kingston; do it from the north coast instead.
- Street-vendor Blue Mountain coffee is suspect; buy beans at Cafe Blue or the estate.
- Uptown safety does not extend everywhere; respect the uptown/downtown line.
Getting around Kingston: public transport and more
- Route taxis and minibuses are the cheap local system, around J$150-300 a hop, but confusing for first-timers.
- Use chartered taxis arranged by your hotel and JUTA or private drivers for day trips; agree the fare first.
- Knutsford Express runs comfortable intercity coaches from New Kingston; book online.
- Most visitors are happier not driving: rough roads, thin signage, aggressive traffic.
- Norman Manley airport is 30 minutes from New Kingston off-peak; allow an hour at peak.
