Is Obudu safe?
- Violent crime is a risk throughout Nigeria; take the road journey, not just the plateau, seriously.
- Take malaria prophylaxis, bring your medicines for the whole stay and hold medical evacuation insurance; the plateau is hours from a major hospital.
- Do not drive at night, do not accept lifts from strangers, and keep valuables out of sight on road stops.
Obudu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Obudu is not a day trip from Calabar; stay at least two nights on the plateau and keep a buffer day for the road.
- There is no second plateau hotel or restaurant row if the resort is full or a facility is closed.
- Older international listings show far lower room rates in dollars; use current Nigerian NGN listings and reconfirm.
Getting around Obudu: public transport and more
- Fly into Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar from Lagos or Abuja, then travel about 330 km by road to the resort.
- Hire a car and driver who knows the Calabar to Obudu route and agree the price in advance; travel in daylight only.
- Budget 6 to 8 hours for the Calabar road in decent conditions, and a full travel day in poor conditions.
- On the plateau, walks and resort activities are arranged through the resort and local guides.
