Things to do in Abuja
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Abuja
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and the best window, sunny with lower humidity and the best outdoor months.
Harmattan dust brings hazy skies, cooler nights and occasional flight disruption.
Best single month: dry, calmer after the festive peak, and Gurara at its swimmable best.
Rainy season: flooded roads, dangerous falls, slick hills, higher humidity but cheaper hotels.
Worst months for rain volume and excursion washouts.
Late harmattan is hard for dust sensitive travellers.

Is Abuja expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | NGN 90,000 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | NGN 240,000 a person |
| Splurge | NGN 500,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- IBB International Golf and Country Club: a few days ahead
- Central Park Abuja: a few days ahead
- Yankari Game Reserve: weeks ahead
- Wakkis: a few days ahead
- Book hotels when booking flights. Official events and December can fill Maitama and CBD in blocks.
- IBB Golf needs member guest access arranged days ahead via a host or concierge.
- Reserve weekend slots for Central Park, Jabi boats, Almat Farms and top Wuse 2 tables, Wakkis especially.
- Most non ECOWAS visitors need a Nigerian visa in advance. Start early via the official channel only.
Is Abuja safe?
- Nigeria is high-risk nationally, with Niger, Kaduna, Bauchi and Plateau states in the highest-risk category.
- Base in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse or CBD, move by car after dark, and use app rides or known drivers, not street hails.
- Avoid the Abuja Kaduna expressway risk and all intercity road travel at night. Excursions are daylight only.
- Drink only sealed branded alcohol in established venues. Counterfeit alcohol was flagged in 2026 guidance.
- Take malaria advice, drink sealed water, and note harmattan dust from December to February can disrupt flights.
Abuja travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- International reseller day tours at 260 to 990 dollars per person for trips a hotel driver delivers for far less.
- Anyone selling casual Aso Rock climbs. Aso is ringed by government and is a viewpoint, not a climb.
- Eagle Square and the National Assembly as standalone destinations. They are five minute stops on a Three Arms loop.
- Swimming in Jabi Lake, Usuma Dam or Mpape quarry lake. Local guidance is boats and banks, not bathing.
Getting around Abuja: public transport and more
- Abuja is a car city with no useful visitor public transport. Use Bolt or inDrive, and hire a car and driver for excursions.
- Airport is 40 to 60 plus minutes from Maitama and Wuse. Use an app ride or pre booked hotel car and confirm the fare.
- Carry naira cash alongside cards. Acceptance is patchy at markets and parks, and network failures are common.
- Cluster each day by district, such as Maitama plus CBD or Wuse plus Jabi, to halve the driving.
