Things to do in Nong Khai
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nong Khai
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool and dry, the best window, with cooler nights and possible morning mist at Sangkhom viewpoints.
Hot and dry, with highs in the mid to high 30s, and Songkran centred on Wat Pho Chai in April.
Rains begin, hot and humid with regular heavy showers and the Mekong rising.
Peak rainy season, the Mekong at its highest and a real risk of riverside flooding, most often in August and September.
Rains easing, defined by Ok Phansa and the reported Naga fireballs downriver at Phon Phisai and Rattanawapi.
What's on
- Songkran 13 to 15 April
Town celebrations centred on Wat Pho Chai, with the Buddha image paraded and water splashing on the riverfront.
- Naga Fireball Festival Ok Phansa night, the end of Buddhist Lent, usually in October
Reported Naga fireballs on the Mekong at Phon Phisai and Rattanawapi, with festival programming in town and downriver. Sightings are not guaranteed.
- Lai Reua Fai Ok Phansa period, late October
Illuminated boat processions launched on the Mekong to mark the end of Buddhist Lent.

The 1994 Mekong bridge to Laos, free to view, and the crossing point for shuttle buses, cars and trains to Vientiane.
Nong Khai Aquarium
A compact Mekong freshwater aquarium with a walk through tunnel, best for families and a hot or rainy hour indoors.
Phra That Bang Phuan
An ancient revered chedi in a quiet compound south of town, a short detour for temple focused travellers.
Where to stay in Nong Khai
Riverfront and Tha Sadet area
first stay, sunset and walking to dinner
Walk to the promenade, Tha Sadet Market, Wat Pho Chai and the Rimkhong restaurants, with guesthouses and a top mid range hotel nearby.
Town centre and Mittraphap side
drivers, groups and early trains
Better for parking, the convention hotel and the budget chain, with rides needed to the promenade for dinner.
Think twice about
- Friendship Bridge and highway strip
Not a safety call. It is noisy, vehicle focused and poor for walking, so use it for crossing, not for sleeping or an evening base.

What to book ahead
- Vientiane: a few days ahead
- Book rooms and onward transport well ahead for the Ok Phansa fireball period in late October.
- Book overnight sleeper trains from Bangkok ahead, especially in cool season and around festivals.
Is Nong Khai safe?
- Do not swim in the Mekong, use repellent by the river at dusk, and cross busy Mittraphap Road with care.
- Use only official checkpoints for the Laos crossing, carry clean US dollars for the Lao visa fee, and cross early in the day.
Nong Khai travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- There is no luxury tier here, so a high priced Nong Khai package is selling transport and margin, not a better sight.
- The Naga fireballs are reported and seasonal, never guaranteed, so a trip sold on seeing them can end with none.
- Daeng Namnuang kitchen closes around 20:00 and Tha Sadet is a daytime market, so late dinner plans fail here.
Getting around Nong Khai: public transport and more
- The centre, promenade, Tha Sadet and Wat Pho Chai are walkable, and tuk-tuks cover the station, Sala Keoku and the bridge.
- The bridge crossing is open daily 06:00 to 22:00, by shuttle bus, international bus, car or train through immigration.
- Cross-border trains to Khamsavath in Vientiane take about 30 minutes, with departures reported around 08:35 and 17:25.
- Udon Thani airport is about 55 to 60 km south, with onward buses and vans of about 1 to 1.5 hours.
