Things to do in Chiang Rai
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Chiang Rai
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool season, best time overall. Clear skies, sea of cloud, gardens in flower and Doi Chang harvest.
Worst month. Smoke can collapse mountain views and air quality, with rising heat.
Hot season. Songkran in mid April, then prices fall. Temples at opening and afternoons indoors.
Green rainy season, lush, clean air, lowest prices and fullest waterfalls. September brings the highest flood risk.
What's on
- Chiang Rai Flower Festival late December to early January
Vast floral displays and parades in the riverside and old city park grounds, generally free.
- Singha Park International Balloon Fiesta February
Hot air balloons over the tea fields at Singha Park, ticketed, with night glow evenings.
- King Mengrai Festival late January to early February
The city's founding father festival, with parades and Lanna cultural shows.
- Loy Krathong / Yi Peng November full moon
Krathong floated on the Kok and lanterns over the city, at a gentler local scale than Chiang Mai.
- Songkran 13-15 April
Thai New Year city wide water fight centred on the centre, with temple merit making in the morning.
- Akha Swing Festival roughly August to September
Akha New Year centred on the giant swing ceremony. Attend respectfully and ask before photographing.
Best things to do in Chiang Rai
Wat Rong Khun
All white mirrored temple by Chalermchai Kositpipat, best seen blazing in low sun at the 8am opening before day trip vans.
Wat Rong Suea Ten
Compact intensely blue temple with cobalt murals and a serene white Buddha, free to visit and beautiful at dusk.
Baan Dam Museum
Thawan Duchanee's black timber estate of halls, horns and carved thrones, a fatalistic artwork rather than a temple.
Wat Huay Pla Kang
Hilltop Guanyin statue you can ride inside to look through its eyes, beside a nine storey pagoda and white viharn.
Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park
Calm landscaped museum park holding the finest public Lanna art collection, centred on the teak Haw Kham pavilion.
Chiang Rai Clock Tower

Where to stay in Chiang Rai
City centre
first trip, all-round base
Walk to the Night Bazaar, Walking Street, Wat Phra Kaew, cafes and most restaurants, with every tour pickup here.
Kok River north bank (Rim Kok)
resort comfort, families and golfers
Big river resorts in gardens with pools and shuttles into town, trading walk out evenings for space and calm.
Riverside east / Wiang Chai side
cafe-country quiet, return visits
Small resorts and boutique stays in a leafy local river bend setting, a Grab ride from everything at night.
Singha Park / south-west edge
a final pool night, not a sightseeing base
Scattered small resorts and farm stays toward Singha Park and the White Temple road, green but drive dependent.
Golden Triangle / Chiang Saen
split stay for the border country
Destination resorts above the Mekong an hour north, for the border country, never as a base for the White Temple.
Doi Mae Salong / Doi Tung / Mae Chan
a mountain night in a longer trip
Ridge guesthouses and the Doi Tung Lodge turn the northern excursions into a stay with mist mornings and no early departure.
Think twice about
- Jetyod Road, as a sleeping street
The centre's one small bar strip, with beer bars and late noise. Fine to visit, wrong for families and light sleepers to sleep on.
- Mae Sai town, as a base
Busy cross border trade town an hour north with thin trade oriented hotels and none of Chiang Rai's sights. Check official advisories before visiting.
- Deep highway fringe on the Phahonyothin corridor
Cheap roadside rooms far south and around the airport sprawl cost a Grab ride for every coffee and sit outside free tour pickup.
- Low-lying riverside and low centre ground in September to early October
The Kok River flooded central Chiang Rai severely in September 2024. Prefer higher ground or check a property's 2024 flood record then.

- Do not arrive at the White Temple at midday in the crowd, go at 8am or late afternoon.
