Things to do in Koh Phangan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Koh Phangan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: dry, coolest, calm seas, peak prices.
Hot and still excellent, with Songkran in mid April and waterfalls thinning.
Smart shoulder: short showers, calm seas, fewer people and lower prices.
Brief showers and plenty of sun, a smaller summer high season.
Quietest and cheapest, turning wet, with the best waterfalls and flexible boat days needed.
Wettest month: heavy rain, rough seas and possible ferry disruption. Avoid for a beach trip.
Rain eases through the month, then Christmas and the New Year Full Moon bring peak crowds and prices.
What's on
- Full Moon Party Monthly, on the night of the full moon
Haad Rin beach party all year, largest around New Year and in July and August. Dates occasionally shift for Buddhist holy days.
- Songkran 13-15 April
Thai New Year water festival in Thong Sala and Haad Rin: embrace it and keep phones and documents dry-bagged.
- Loy Krathong Full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, usually November
Festival of lights with floats and lanterns in Thong Sala and the villages, in the island's wettest month.
Best things to do in Koh Phangan
Full Moon Party
The original full moon beach party, with a strip of sound systems and fire shows running until sunrise.
Mae Haad Beach
Walk the sandbar to Koh Ma at low tide and snorkel the island's best shore reef on a rising tide.
Bottle Beach
A wide, quiet cove reached by boat, 4x4 track or jungle hike, so it never fills like the road beaches.
Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach
The island's best all-round swimming beach, a sheltered bay with soft sand and a small village behind it.
Zen Beach
Srithanu's sunset gathering, with swimming, a drum circle and slacklines, and nothing organised or sold.
Than Sadet Waterfall
A royal-inscribed waterfall stream above a wild-feeling east coast beach, best after rain.
Phaeng Waterfall
The accessible jungle waterfall, climbed for the Domsila Viewpoint over the island interior.
Orion Healing Center
The easiest drop-in yoga on the island, with two shalas, a vegan cafe and a steam room by the beach.
Where to stay in Koh Phangan
Srithanu and the northwest coast
first trip, all-round base
Sunsets, yoga, cafes and good snorkel beaches, with the easiest logistics on the island.
Thong Nai Pan Noi
beach holiday, couples and families
The island's best swimming beach and its luxury resorts, a deliberate taxi ride from everything else.
Leela Beach and Haad Rin
Full Moon and party trips
Walk to the party and walk home to quiet at Leela, the peninsula's calm sunset side.
Haad Tien
wellness retreat
A roadless cove reached by boat or coast path, built around one famous wellness resort.
Thong Sala
budget and transit nights
The pier, the food market and town prices, with the island's least attractive beach.
Think twice about
- Haad Rin town in Full Moon week
Loud until past dawn, priced at its annual maximum and covered in party debris by morning. Sleep at Leela Beach instead unless the party is the whole trip.
- Baan Tai main road on party nights
Jungle and half moon venues sit on this road, so rooms directly on it get bass and taxi traffic. A side road a hundred metres back fixes it.
- Northeast bases if you plan nightly trips elsewhere
The Thong Nai Pan and Than Sadet hill roads are steep and unlit in stretches. Base there and eat there after dark rather than commuting nightly.

Is Koh Phangan safe?
- Scooter crashes are the island's main serious risk, above all the ride home from a party: take a songthaew instead.
- Watch drinks being made at big parties, keep cash small and leave valuables at your room, and never join the fire rope jumping.
- Drug possession arrests around parties are a long-standing pattern and Thai penalties are severe.
- No lifeguards: east coast swell is dangerous in the monsoon, and jellyfish warnings should be heeded after storms.
Koh Phangan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Beach buckets made with cheap spirits of variable provenance.
- Scooter damage claims for pre-existing scratches, enabled by a held passport.
- Full Moon VIP packages that add little beyond a shirt, a drink and a terrace.
Getting around Koh Phangan: public transport and more
- No airport: every arrival is a ferry to Thong Sala Pier, about 30 minutes from Koh Samui or several hours from Surat Thani on joint bus and ferry tickets.
- Songthaew pickups are the taxis: agree the price first, roughly 100 baht for short southern hops and 200 to 300 baht cross-island.
- Only rent a scooter if you genuinely ride, wear a helmet, video the bike at pickup and never leave your passport as deposit.
