Things to do in Namibe
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Namibe
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry cacimbo season, cooler, clear and passable for Iona, Arco and Tchitundu-Hulu. Best window, with cold sea and cold desert nights.
Hot season, sea at its warmest around March, but heat punishes inland excursions and any rain falls now and can damage tracks.
Coldest months in the city climate tables, with mean temperatures below 18 degrees and heavy coastal fog from the Benguela Current.
Best things to do in Namibe
Praia Amelia
The city beach south of the centre, best for a walk and sunset beside a cold Benguela Current sea, not a long swim.
Museu Provincial do Namibe
The one indoor sight in the city, a provincial museum in a mid 19th century building in the old centre.
Igreja de Santo Adriao
A simple late Baroque colonial parish church that anchors a walking loop of the historic centre.
Palacio de Mocamedes
An imposing 19th century governor palace seen from the street, an architecture stop rather than an interior visit.
Fortaleza de Sao Fernando
The fort headland at Ponta Negra where a fort was first built in 1840, with access and repair state unconfirmed.
Where to stay in Namibe
Old centre and Marginal
hotels, restaurants and first trip base
Around Avenida Eduardo Mondlane and Rua Kaumba, walkable to the Marginal, the nautical club and the old centre sights.
Praia Amelia
beachside quiet
South of the centre by the city beach, quieter and by the sea, with a ride into town needed for most meals and services.
Think twice about
- Unmarked tracks inland from the coastal road
Landmines and unexploded ordnance from the civil war remain in many parts of Angola, and the desert has no signal, water or rescue. Stay on paved roads and known tracks with a local guide.
- The Serra da Leba pass after dark
Steep hairpins, trucks and fast changing weather at the top make this a daylight only drive in every source consulted.
Best restaurants in Namibe
Restaurante Clube Nautico Mocamedes
The best supported restaurant in the city, fresh fish and crab in a 1940s nautical club on the Marginal.
La Mar Dinner and Shisha Club
A seafood restaurant on the Marginal listed with long hours, the closest thing in the city to a late option.
Restaurante Liopa
A central restaurant for African, European and Portuguese food that recurs in every short Namibe list.
Lodge Vila Doroteia Restaurant and Bar
A lodge restaurant and bar that appears in every short Namibe restaurant list, in a market with very few.

Angola largest desert park, a permit only guided expedition for oryx, zebra, welwitschia plains and empty coast.

Is Namibe safe?
- Stay on known tracks because of landmines and unexploded ordnance, carry passport originals for checkpoints, do not drive after dark, and insure for medical evacuation.
Namibe travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Paying platform prices in dollars for rooms listed in kwanza on the Angolan hotel portal for far less.
- Assuming a luxury hotel, an Iona lodge or a bookable coastal train exists because an aggregator lists one.
- Searching only one spelling of Mocamedes, Tombwa or Tchitundu-Hulu and missing half the sources.
Getting around Namibe: public transport and more
- Fly TAAG Luanda to Mocamedes, code MSZ, about 1 hour 45 minutes and about daily, but confirm and leave a Luanda buffer night.
- The Lubango road is about 180 km via the Serra da Leba pass, with buses listed at about 4 hours and the pass itself slow and daylight only.
- Do not plan on a Mocamedes to Lubango passenger train: documented passenger services run inland from Lubango to Menongue, and the coastal section is documented for freight.
- Every desert excursion needs a hired 4x4, a driver who knows the tracks, full fuel, water and cash in kwanza.
