Dense informal districts with poor lighting and no visitor infrastructure. Visit only on a reputable guided daytime programme.
- Serpentine road (Rua Nehru) below the US Embassy, Miramar
Robberies documented on this stretch to the Marginal. Drive it, do not walk it, even though Miramar is a good base.
- Baixa backstreets after dark for cheap unvetted rooms
Unlit side streets plus walking home after dinner is the pattern safety guides warn against. Pay for a reputable hotel with a car.
