Things to do in Lumbini
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lumbini
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The window: post monsoon clarity, warm days, cool misty dawns, winter birds on the wetlands, and foggy cold early mornings in December and January.
Extreme heat building past 40 degrees by May, dust and humidity, with Buddha Jayanti falling in this period, usually in May.
Monsoon: heavy rain, local flooding, disrupted Terai roads and the worst dengue risk. Not recommended for a first visit.
What's on
- Buddha Jayanti Full moon of Baisakh, usually May, occasionally late April
The Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death day, with ceremonies at the Maya Devi Temple and pilgrims filling the town.

late arrivals, early flights and resort comfort
The airport town 22 km away with the area's biggest hotels, the wrong base for dawn at the garden.
Think twice about
- Sunauli border crossing strip
Transit hotels on a busy truck border, noisy and purely functional. Sleep there only if a border timing forces it.
- Bhairahawa as a sightseeing base
Comfortable for flights, but 22 km each way costs you the dawn hour in the Sacred Garden that makes Lumbini.

Is Lumbini safe?
- Terai strikes called bandhs can close the Bhairahawa and Sunauli roads with little warning, so keep a buffer before flights.
- Use mosquito repellent seriously in and after the monsoon, when dengue circulates in the Terai, and carry evacuation insurance.
Lumbini travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Arriving at the Sacred Garden at midday in April or May, when heat above 40 degrees empties and punishes the site.
- Basing yourself in Bhairahawa and missing dawn in the garden, the hour that makes the whole trip.
- Assuming monasteries are open at lunchtime, when many close from about noon to 2 pm.
- Crossing at Sunauli without a buffer for border and bus delays in either direction.
Getting around Lumbini: public transport and more
- Fly to Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa, about 22 km away, then taxi or bus under an hour to the gates.
- Walk the Sacred Garden, cycle the monastic zones, or hire an e-rickshaw by the day at about NPR 1,500 to 2,500.
- The Maya Devi Temple to World Peace Pagoda axis is about 3.2 km, so do not plan to walk it at midday in summer.
- Tilaurakot and Kudan need a vehicle and driver from Lumbini, best arranged through your hotel the day before.
