Cold and clear and quiet, but Shree Antu and Sandakpur are properly cold and tea factories slow in December.
Spring rhododendron bloom on the Chhintapu and Sandakpur ridges and the first flush tea season, hazing by May.
Monsoon: heavy rain, cloud, leeches and landslide risk on the Mechi Highway; avoid for viewpoints.

Is Ilam safe?
- In monsoon, Mechi Highway and local roads are landslide prone; travel in daylight and build in buffer days.
- Ilam Bazaar streets are steep and uneven with patchy lighting and free roaming dogs; use a torch at night.
- Sandakpur is 3,636 metres; ascend over at least two days and descend if altitude symptoms persist.
- In monsoon, expect road blockages from June to September and check conditions before travelling.
Ilam travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Day tripping to Shree Antu for sunrise means a risky night drive; sleep in the village instead.
- Unlabelled loose tea at viewpoint stalls is a gamble; taste before buying in quantity in Ilam Bazaar or Fikkal.
- A one night Ilam add on is mostly driving; the district needs at least two nights to make sense.
Getting around Ilam: public transport and more
- Fly Kathmandu to Bhadrapur in about 45 minutes, then allow 3 to 4 hours by road to Ilam Bazaar and 4 to 5 hours to Kanyam and Shree Antu.
- Do not trust routing sites that give about 1.5 hours for Bhadrapur to Ilam; no operator itinerary supports that figure.
- Hire jeeps through your hotel or homestay host, agree the full day price before setting off, and carry cash in NPR.
- The Kathmandu to Ilam direct bus takes about 12 to 14 hours in good conditions, usually overnight.
