Things to do in Everest Region
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Everest Region
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Main season: clearest post monsoon skies, all lodges and clinics open, busiest trails and fullest Lukla flights.
Spring season: rhododendrons below Tengboche, Everest expeditions fill Base Camp, afternoon cloud and haze build.
Winter: brilliant and empty but severe cold, many upper lodges closed, and the high passes often snowbound.
Monsoon: cloud, leeches low down and the worst Lukla flight cancellations of the year. A poor bet for fixed dates.
What's on
- Mani Rimdu at Tengboche Monastery Late October or November, by the lunar calendar; check dates

The Thame version of Mani Rimdu, in the quieter western valley above Namche.

Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred Gokyo Lakes during monsoon, when the valley is at its emptiest of trekkers.
- Losar February or March, lunar dates
Tibetan New Year: monasteries active and the trail quiet at the tail of winter.

The school Hillary founded in 1961, still teaching Khumjung children, visited respectfully at the school day's edge.
Where to stay in Everest Region
Lukla
transit night at the airstrip
The gateway at 2,860 m; keep the first and last nights short and simple, or use the chain lodge for comfort.

gentle first night on trail
A riverside village at 2,610 m that keeps day one short on purpose, with the chain lodge as its top end.
Monjo
splitting the climb to Namche
The last village before the park entrance at 2,835 m, home to an upscale lodge that softens the big climb.
Namche Bazaar
the capital and acclimatisation base
Two nights minimum at 3,440 m, with the region's only real choice of luxury, mid range and budget lodges, plus bakeries and shops.
Thame
quiet Sherpa village and Three Passes gateway
A traditional village at 3,800 m west of Namche, with a monastery, a chain lodge and far fewer trekkers.

a destination panorama night

Think twice about
- Sleeping high on arrival by helicopter
Flying straight to Namche, Syangboche or higher to save time is a recognised pattern in serious altitude cases. Arrive at Lukla and walk up in stages.
- Lobuche and Gorak Shep as bases
Both are necessities, not bases: basic, crowded and very cold at 4,940 m and 5,164 m. Sleep there only as the route requires and descend promptly.
- Rasuwagadhi-Timure-Syafrubesi area, Rasuwa district
An area hit by flood damage in August 2026. It is on the China border west of the Khumbu and not on any Everest route, but do not route any Nepal travel through it.

Cafe Danphe

Tengboche Bakery
Coffee and apple pie at 3,867 m by the monastery, a disproportionate joy after the long climb from the river.

Best coffee in Everest Region

Sherpa Barista Bakery and Coffee Shop
Real espresso and bakery items on Namche Marg, the modern end of Namche coffee for acclimatisation days.
Namche Bakery Cafe
Pies, brownies and coffee in the bazaar, an unofficial trekkers clubhouse on rest and bad weather days.

Nangkartshang Peak
The Dingboche acclimatisation ridge climb, looking at Makalu and Island Peak, then down to sleep low.

Is Everest Region safe?
- Above 3,000 m, raise sleeping altitude by no more than about 500 m a day, rest every three to four days, and never ascend with symptoms.
- Descent is the treatment for worsening altitude sickness. Oxygen and medicines only buy time.
- Insurance must cover trekking to 5,545 m and helicopter evacuation, and helicopters cannot fly in cloud, wind or darkness.
Everest Region travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Shorter Base Camp itineraries are usually shorter because they cut an acclimatisation night in Namche or Dingboche.
- Eating away from your teahouse breaks the trail contract and the cheap room becomes an expensive one.
- Meat, salads and unpeeled food get riskier with altitude, because everything arrived unrefrigerated on a porter's back.
Getting around Everest Region: public transport and more
- There is no road in. Reach Lukla by a 20 to 35 minute flight, then walk everywhere; loads move by porter, mule and yak.
- In peak season most Lukla flights leave from Ramechhap Manthali, a 4 to 5 hour night drive from Kathmandu, not from Kathmandu itself.
- Build in at least two spare days for Lukla weather delays and never fly home internationally on the day you leave Lukla.
